••Madison's POV••
School is boring. It's just a fact. Sure, you want to go to see all your friends and hang out, but the classes are about as fun as watching paint dry. English class is especially banal. I basically spend all my time listening to information that I will know perfectly after its said to me one time. I can remember almost anything perfectly now since the night I blacked out in my room, just not what happened that evening.
I used to always doodle sketches of significant symbols on the sides of my paper, but now I find myself unaware of the new doodle I scribble on my papers now. It's always the same thing, the dim-lit woods. I have become extremely irritated that I don't know what is so special about these trees or why Owen has anything to do with it. I decided to ask Renee if she could spend the night. She's the type of person who will look at your situation in her perspective, and then in yours. She knows exactly what to say and how to make anyone laugh over anything.
The house is so quiet and empty when my dad travels around for business. He's normally gone about a week or more every month. I don't mind being alone, but I hate feeling alone.
I heard the sound of Renee's car pull in the drive way from my bedroom. I sped down the steps in a matter of seconds to answer the door before she had even got to it yet. To my surprise, it was Owen who had stopped by.
"Hey Madison, I know its last minute, but do you want to go for a ride around for a while? I want to talk to you about something.." He trailed off. Of course I wanted to go with him, and I almost agreed when I remembered Renee was going to be over soon. I invited him in and gave Renee a call.
"Yeah I'd love to. Give me one second." I was just about to call Renee when I saw a text from her informing me she was going to be late and wouldn't be here until nine or ten in the evening. It was almost six and I had time. I got in the front of his truck and we drove off.
••Owen's POV••
I didn't actually think she would just openly leave with me, but then I remembered this is Madison O'Claire. The girl who would look so quiet on the outside but fool you once you got to know her. She's not one to be messed with, and her curiousity will take her anywhere if she lets it. I love her overall attitude, so easy to talk to. Her brunette curls covered sides of her face until she would push them back, revealing her stunning, green eyes and her clear, pale skin.
"Where are we going?" I knew she would ask and I already knew my response.
"I don't know." I knew this was not the reply she was expecting, which is exactly why I said it.
"Are we just going to drive around?"
"That's what I said when I asked, isn't it?" I wasn't giving her what her curiousity was craving.
"Alright, so what did you want to talk about then?" Of course since I didn't give her what she wanted, she asks the second thing that's on her mind.
"I wanted to tell you how I saw you in the hospital."
"Yeah, I knew you were lying to me when you said you saw me while you were on an internship. So how did you see me?"
"I well, I'd rather just show you." I pulled over onto a dirt road and followed it until it stopped at a dead end. Madison's face showed no fear of me whatsoever, but by the way she was sitting and breathing I could tell she was nervous. I asked her to turn towards me and of course she had to ask why, so I took her cold hands into mine and turned her attention to my eyes.
"How are you going to show me?" Her voice was hesitant and I know she wants more elaborate answers than what I am giving her.
"Don't think, just trust me. Now, be still." Her eyes lit up at the sound of my voice. I pressed my finger to her chin and lifted her face parallel to mine. We caught eachother in another intense contact like the time in Biology, and again I knew she could see what I was trying to show her.
••Madison's POV••
Owen has my hands in his cold, tight grip and I am full of unanswered and unasked questions. I trust him with my life but I don't understand what he's telling me. That moment when our eyes were caught in sync together, in the front seat of his truck, at a dead end of an unknown dirt road, was when I saw the forest again. It was exactly like I had seen it the first time and all the other times. I broke the emense stare out of pure confusion.
"How are you doing that?!" I yelled. "Owen Williams, I want to know exactly how you saw me in the hospital and how you keep doing that vision thing with your eyes."
"Madison O'Claire, it's not that easy of a concept to explain.." He trailed off again and I was growing angry.
"Yes, it is that easy. Just use your words, Owen! I'm sorry, I'm not angry with you, I just want answers and judging on how much you bring back my memory, even right down to your voice, I think I know that you're who I should get them from."
I'm not stupid, he knows that. Every time I talk to Owen, he brings back memories going all the way back to when we were toddlers. His whole personality gives off a comforting feeling to me and I love it.
"I wasn't completely lying, I saw you through a window." I knew what he was trying to tell me. He was the reason for the hand print and frost left on the glass.
"How did you know what room I was in? How did you know I was there? Why didn't you just come inside the room instead of watching me from the outside?"
"Madison, hush. Calm down and let me explain. I couldn't come inside because watching you from the window was painful for me, knowing you had been hurt and that the only barrier between us was a glass panel. I knew you were in the hospital because I saw your dad carrying you to the car and I followed it. I knew what room you were in because I..."
"Because you what?" I wish he would stop trailing off and spit his words out.
"I followed your scent."
At this very moment, sitting here with this stunning guy, I knew exactly what he was trying to tell me. He wasn't human. But he wasn't a monster.
Owen began to explain the story about Malinda Burns, about Autumn, and about the Cold Ones. Even though he was different now, I saw no difference in him, or the boy I kissed on the playground.
I remember we used to get into trouble all the time for passing love notes in class, we would have to sit at opposite ends of a table next to the teachers at recess. He was even my very first kiss! We used to chase eachother around on the playground. After about the third grade, Owen moved somewhere so his mom could be with her family. I really missed Owen and I hope he doesn't leave my life again.
Owen put the car in reverse and we were driving back into town. This was probably the most comforting silence I had ever endured in my life. As much as anyone else would have thought there was awkward tension between us now, I felt opposite. He pulled into my drive way and right behind us was Renee in her cute, baby blue bug convertible. Owen came around the car and opened my door for me. I looked in those gorgeous eyes and gave him the biggest hug I could. I heard a throaty giggle fall out of that beautiful smile of his from my hair tickling his neck in the wind. His scent was so amazing I didn't want to let go, but his outrageous strength was a little to hard on my small body.
"See you later? Do you need a ride to school Monday?" In my mind I screamed "Yes!" but I just told him I would text him if it was alright with my dad.
Renee ran over to me, bent down to my height and whispered "I want to know everything." I know she means about Owen and I so I said "I won't leave out a single detail." I lied, of course I couldn't tell her about Owen not being internally human.
I watched his car pullout of the drive way and immediately texted him saying I did need a ride to school on Monday.
He did leave out one of my many unanswered questions, he didn't tell me why his eyes gave me the flashback to the forest.
Renee and I raced to my room and I told her almost everything. She and Kathleen knew about Owen being my first kiss because they went to the same school as us when it happened. We spent the rest of the night watching our favorite television series, eating fattening foods and laughing until we fell asleep.
