"Hey Madison, this is Owen." I had just received a text message from Owen two days after our intense staring contest in Biology on Monday. A part of me was curious as to how he got my phone number, but another part was happy that he took the chance to talk to me outside of our simple waves or glances at school.
"Hey Owen, how are you?" I replied a few minutes later as I sat on the couch watching the news with my dad. He replied almost two minutes later.
"I'm good, I just wanted to say that I've always noticed your pretty eyes, but the other day in biology I noticed how the rest of you has grown to match those beautiful eyes. You've changed so much since kindergarten. Can I call you? It's just easier than texting."
I excused myself to my room up stairs and at the end of the hall and shut the door behind me. My window was still open from the night my dad found me. I tried to close it, but something was lodged in the lock so it would stay open. I know that I didn't do that, and my father hates the windows being open without screens on them. I decided to ignore it.
"Sure." I replied. My phone rang a few seconds later.
I was nervous to answer it at first but I shook it off.
"Hey Owen," I answered.
"Hey, you're probably wondering how I got your number. I found an old photo of the two of us in elementary school and it had your moms old cell phone number on it so I thought I would give it a try."
It was worth a try. When my mother passed away my dad gave me her cell phone so I could call him if there was an emergency.
"Woah, your voice is way different than it was ten years ago. I guess I'm not the only one who has changed a lot since then, haha."
"I heard you were in the hospital on Sunday and I noticed your dad's car wasn't in the drive way when I passed your house after dropping Autumn at school." Autumn is his 10 year old sister. He's been taking care of the both of them since their parents both died in a car accident last year. Even though Owen is 18, we have a few classes together since I took several classes online over the summer. I almost completely forgot about Autumn and that she goes to a school ten minutes from my house but I did remember that they live in a small apartment just past her elementary school.
"You heard I was in the hospital? From who?" I didn't think anyone else knew but my dad and I.
"Well, I saw you there, I was, uh, interning at the front office and I saw you when I walked past your room w-window." He was lying. Even though we barely talk, I could sense he wasn't telling the truth.
••Owen's POV••
I didn't want to, but I had to lie to her. It's obvious Madison still doesn't remember what happened that night, or what had caused it. Actually, it was more like who had caused it. I knew she was just beginning to gain her memory back when I stared in her bright, jewel-like eyes that day in Biology. I could see her thoughts in my eyes like a movie being played on a blank screen.
The truth is, I saw her in the hospital that day because I followed her dad's car, and watched her through her hospital room window. I couldn't help but desperately listen to the slow, rhythmic beat of her heart pumping her new blood. I watched her beautiful face motionless for hours until I left, leaving behind frost from my breath on the window. I want desperately to tell her, but she won't understand, yet.
Talking to Madison makes me happy. Although we just started talking for the first time since we were younger, we never have boring conversations. As much as I want to explain what had happened that night, why she feels so different than before, I do want her to understand everything, but I know she needs to solve this puzzle by her self, one piece at a time.
