The next week went quite well. I wasn't being shunned by any of my classmates, but instead of my peers I was being ignored by Aric who seemed really shy all of a sudden around me, it was annoying not understanding why, and I grew to appreciate the Professor's ability to read mind without fiscal contact.
Everything was going great, even Rabecca and Emit, who I roomed with before asked if I would room with them again, but I declined, I wanted to have a bit more space to myself, and the professor thought it would be a good idea too. On that Saturday the weather was amazing everyone went outside and practices their powers (with supervision), played basketball, or sat in the garden I had made, and enjoyed the fresh air. I decided to go to my room to get my favorite book (Pride and Prejudice) to read outside, but when I entered my room someone was waiting for me that I wasn't expecting.
"Conner what are you doing here?!" I ran up to my brother and gave him a big hug, and noticed through my telepathy that he was uneasy, but he returned my hug with a much less enthusiastic one.
"Hey Mer (that was his nickname for me) I just came by to see how you were doing at your new school."
"You came all the way from Australia to ask me how schools going? Is everything alright, is Elizabeth and Merida ok?" Elizabeth is Conner's wife and Merida is their daughter that they named after me.
"Yeah they're fine... but I really came to ask you one thing." He paused and I could see hesitation in his eyes.
"What is it Conner?" I was getting worried now.
"Are you one of them?!" He blurted this out as if I should know what he meant, but I didn't so I took his hand and using my telepathy, and I saw what he meant. He was talking about mutants. The resentment I sensed in him, and the fear that I might be one of them was eating away at him, but I had to tell him the truth no matter how much it might hurt him.
"Yes I am a mutant, but it's not what you think." He wouldn't listen to me, he staggered away from me and I could feel tears pricking at my eyes.
       "You're... you're a monster like them?"
"It's not what you think we're not monsters, all we want is to be accepted."
"I'm sorry Merida I have to do what's best for those of us that are normal." He pulled a pistol out from under his jacket and aimed it at me.
"Conner no please, you're my big brother I love you, me being a mutant doesn't change that."
"I will remember you as you were not what you've become I promise, I love you Merida."
Bang, bang, bang. The gun went off three times, but I was in too much shock to deflect even one of the bullets.
Falling to the ground I stretched my mind to call out to Professor Xavier, but I couldn't be sure he heard me.
Conner walked up and stood above me and said "I will tell mom and dad you drowned or something, so that they won't have to live knowing what you were. I love you." He walked away without even turning back.
