'T-Tony?'
'Hey kid...'
Tears welled in Peter's eyes, Was it really Tony? he thought. Is it really him?
'Don't cry kid. I'm here. I'm not leaving you again, I promise...'
'How...?' Peter croaked, it was all he could manage to say.
'I'll explain, but do me a favour and press the button of the side of you desk'
Peter, confused, hesitantly walked over to find the button. He was still in shock.
How is this possible? he thought, Is it really him?
Peter found the button. It was silver with a shiny red rim around its base.
'Go on, press it' he heard Tony say.
He listened to Tony. 'I think you're going to like th-' Tony's voice went mute.
'Tony? T-Tony are you there?...Tony?'
'Turn around.' he heard Tony's voice, but it wasn't from the suit.
He turned and saw Tony standing in front of him. He smiled as tears fell down his face.
'Tony...'
'Hey kid...'
'Ar-Are you really here?'
'Yes and no. I am here' he gestured to his body, 'But I'm not here'. He walked over to Peter's desk, and his hand went through. 'I am a hologram Peter, I-I'm sorry...'
Tears welled in Peter's eyes, 'Your-You're here?'
Peter sat down on his bed, overwhelmed. Tony sat next to him.
'H-How are you...?' Peter said gesturing to him on the bed.
'I'm a projection. I can be projected onto, or on top of stuff, but I can't touch stuff'
'Oh...'
'Peter I'm so sorry. I wasn't the father figure you deserved. You're such a bright kid, you deserved so much better then what I gave you. I'm so sorry I wasn't there when you needed me. But now I am. I knew that for you to wake up it could only end in one way. I changed the AI from Karen to me so, if I wasn't there for you before, I could be there for you now. Peter, I hope you know I never wanted to leave you, but it was the only way. Peter you were always like my son, I was willing to do anything to make sure you'd be okay.'
Peter was now crying. 'I-I still play your message', he managed to say.
'Well now, you can here me say it to your face. Peter I was always proud of you, and I am so so sorry if I didn't show it. Peter you were truly the best son I could have ever asked for'
Tears fell softly down Peter's face. 'You were the best Dad I could ask for'. Tony smiled as tears welled in his eyes, 'Peter, you deserved so much better than me...'
Peter smiled at Tony, 'But who ever said I wanted better?'
Tony looked down.
'You will never understand how much I regret one thing'
'W-What's that?' Peter asked, tears still falling down his face.
'How much I pushed you away... I would leave you voicemails unread, not reply to your messages. Tell you that 'This is beyond you' or 'There are people who sort out this type of thing', instead of taking the time to teach you. Peter I'm so sorry, but I want to be here now.'
It wasn't the same...it'll never be the same. Peter thought.
Overwhelmed, Peter ran out of his room.
'Kid?...'
Peter ran down the hall.
He stopped running and leaned against a wall. He sat down tried to gather his breath but he couldn't, eventually he just gave in and let himself cry.
He then heard footsteps and looked up, it was Thor.
'Ah! It's the younger Spider!' Thor saw Peter's face full of tears his expression changed, from happy, to empathy.
'What's the matter?'
'Nothing -uh- I'm fine.' Peter said quickly wiping away his tears, he didn't want to look weak in front of Thor.
'You aren't fine, you have been crying. What's the matter?' he asked again.
'I-It's just... never mind...'
'I'm not as strong as you think I am, you know. I cry and mourn too.' he looked at Peter reassuringly.
'I-I put my suit on and the AI changed from Karen. It changed to Tony. I know this sounds weird but even with him talking to me I feel distant. It's like I have him back, but I don't. He's still gone' tears welled in Peter's eyes, 'A-And he can't come back...'
Thor, of all people, understood what it was like to loose someone, then get them back, but still feel distant. He was just confused about one thing, 'What's an AI?'
Peter thought it was best not to get too technical. 'It's the voice in my suit'. Thor immediately understood. 'So now Tony is the voice in your suit?'
'Yeah, and also a hologram -uh- a projection of light'
'Oh...' Thor put his hand on Peter's shoulder, 'I know, trust me, it is difficult going through this, but take it as it comes. You can see your father again-'
'Uh- he isn't- I'm not...' Peter drifted off.
'Does not matter. Take it as it comes. You see him, he is there, he is talking to you. Talk back.'
Peter nodded, 'Thanks Thor'
'No problem Spider-ling!'
Peter laughed, 'It's um, Spider-man...'
He got up, leaving Thor, and returned to his room.
