Age: 10

Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana

"Saiph, come here girl" thick brown curls swung around as the light skinned child smiled and ran towards the only mother figure she has at the moment. Gemma bare-feet ran towards Mamie who held a stern mask.

Gemma stopped in front of her in question "Mrs. Hale wanna speak to you" she announced, fear struck through Gemma's small body. "Now girl, don't be afraid now. I'll be right next to you" she assured her and began to lead her towards the big house.

"There she is" Adelia Hale spoke up, bringing attention onto Gemma or 'Saiph' as Josephine named her.

Adelia looked the girl up and down before nodding "she will do, bath her, make her look presentable and train the little nigger" she clapped at the older house slaves. Gemma turned to Mamie who gave her an encouraging nod before gently pushing her to the house slaves.

"I'll be here" Mamie told her quietly before standing in her stop next to Adelia who sat on the porch, drinking sweet tea.

The four slaves hurried the small child inside of the house and up the stairs into the large room. Inside sat a grand piano, couches, an area of alcohol and a claw tub.

Two slaves poured hot water from a bucket, the other soap and roses, while the other two undressed Gemma out of the dirty torn cloth called a dress. "Here, step in there" one of the women ordered Gemma.

She stepped inside and furrowed her eyebrows and looked at one of the women "is it suppose to be hot?" she asked. The women chuckled and nodded "yes, but the white folks take the hot baths most of the time" one answered "but they barely take baths" they began to gossip "we take moe' baths than they do" one scoffed in laughter.

"What's yo' name child?" Gemma bit her lip before answering "my name is Gemma, but Josephine gave me the name Saiph" she answered. "Saiph, huh? Well, I'm Misty, these women here are Teresa, Ruth and Ethel" Misty introduced herself and the women around her.

Gemma gave a small smile before flinching, Ruth paused from beginning to scrub her. "Sorry" Gemma mumbled, Ruth nodding with a kind smile "it's fine, I won't be use to this either" she assured her.

As Ruth scrub the dirty and grit from Gemma's skin, Teresa and Misty began teaching her how to talk to the household and how to behave.

Ethel washed her hair pouring oils she mixed from flowers and herbs, "you don't talk like us...where you from?" Ethel asked as she poured the warm water down Gemma's dark hair. "My father said I was from England, he told me Small Heath, Birmingham encase I was ever lost and need to find my way back home" Gemma frowned.
