As soon as Ayla heard the voice waking her up, her battle instincts told her to defend herself. She then realize that the voice was Newt but by the time she realized that, she had already disarmed him.
"Hey, relax. It's me." Newt said. Ayla simply replied with a sorry. Then silence occurred once again. This time, it was an awkward silent. Ayla sighed. A part of her wanted to tell Newt everything that had been bothering her, but the other part would tell her to just let go of it.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Newt asked.
"Well you're gonna have to be more specific on what you're asking me because I have no idea what 'it' means." She replied sarcastically and gave him a flat look. He was surprised that she would reply like that but he had figured that it would be normal for newbies to talk like that since they might not be used to living in the glade with a bunch of strangers.
Just as Newt wanted to reply her, the lunch horn was signaled so he took her to the dinning area instead. They grabbed their food and sat at one of the tables. Ayla hadn't noticed that she was starving until she had taken a bite from Frypan's delicious sandwich. Somehow, Newt noticed that and chuckled, "You always seem hungry whenever you have your meal."
"Well, this is me, always hungry whenever there's food." She replied with a small laugh that was barely noticeable. He seems trustworthy... maybe I should tell him about my dreams, maybe it would help me... she thought. She took a deep breath and said, " Can I ask you something, Newt?" He nodded and gestured her to continue her question.
"Do you think it's possible for people to...contact you through dreams?" Newt was surprised by her question as he had never known anyone who could communicate through dreams and so he didn't know how to reply her. Ayla's situation had got him thinking whether she was a normal teenager. Whatever she was, it wouldn't matter because she's just like every other glader, a person without their memory.
"Not that I know anyone who got that situation but... yeah, it could be possible. I've also heard that dreams have their meaning, like they're trying to deliver a message to you." Newt replied.
"Where did you get that idea from?" Ayla giggled.
"Honestly I have no idea, must've heard of it when...you know...when I still have my memories."
"You know what, let's not talk about the sad things. Alby gave you the tour this morning right?" He added.
"Yeah, what about it?"
"I'm sure he's told you about the jobs we have here so I'm wondering if you, by chance, have any preferences in your job."
Ayla had thought about his question for a second and decided to answer it truthfully.
"To be honest, I want to be a runner. And before you jump into the conclusion that I'm crazy, here me out, please."
Newt wanted to admit that she had gone insane since no one had ever volunteered to be a runner. However, he had seen what she could do and decided to stay silent on her confession.
"I take that as a cue for me to continue. So... as you know, I fell asleep just now, and I had a dream. But the dream felt... real. It's like I was there and I have experienced whatever it was in the dream. In the dream, I was at a camp, and me and my old friends, I guess, were practicing our fighting techniques in a game the whole camp participates in, it's called 'Capture the flag', I think. I was in the same team as my best friend and she's also the team leader. She assigned me to get the flag. From that moment, I realized why I've wanted to be a runner in the first place. It was because I know that I am capable of doing so and I know I can help find a way out of here. So please, help me convince Alby to let me be a runner, I'd do anything for it." Newt was stunned but he still managed to reply her.
"Look Ayla, it's not that I don't want to help you, but it's really hard for me or anyone to convince Alby since he does things, or rather everything, by the rules and according to the rules, you have to be promoted by the keeper of your job to be a runner." He paused, then added, "But I'll see what I can do."
"Thank you... it means a lot."
The day went by really slowly for Ayla but she took the time to think and soon, the day was over.

A/N Hello people. Please read this. I injured my wrist so I can't really type, but I'm getting a lot better now. I know, the chapters are pretty boring since there's like nothing special happening in this story and this chapter is pretty short. But I like to write stories in detail so please be patient. I'll try to update as much as possible during summer. Sorry about that. Hope you enjoyed this chapter :)
