Some time away from Apotos, the sun had started its ascent over the horizon and greeted the world with its morning light. A few hours passed by as the three quietly flew through the sky and beyond the clouds. Hopefully somewhere in the afternoon both androids and fairy would reach Spagonia, then talk to Dr. Cain about the Earth's current situation and possibly about X's Werehunter form that only appears at night.
"Well, X? Feels pretty good to fly around like this, huh?" Axl asked from the pilot seat of his Wind Raider.
"It's not too shabby," the blue hunter replied behind him.
"The Doctor's just a hop and a skip with... Wait, what's that approaching?"
As soon as the words left Axl's lips a squadron of fighter jets suddenly appeared from the clouds, probably the welcoming committee sent by Sigma to halt their progress.
"Yup! Here comes the parade!" X quoted as the jets zoomed around them.
"Don't worry, X, I've got this one!" Axl said as he looked at the radar before pressing a button on his control panel. "Wind Raider... Switch to Battle Mode!"
The brunet hunter's plane soon transformed into a fighter jet version of itself and sped off to meet the others. X had to hang onto something to keep from falling off and plummeting hundreds to thousands of feet below the deep blue sea. After regaining his balance, the Blue Bomber was instructed by the younger Maverick Hunter on how to fire the Wind Raider's gun and received a warning that it will overheat and cool down if used too much.
He fired at the airborne enemies as soon as they came into view out of the cloudy expanse, and Axl had to move the Wind Raider out of firing range so it wouldn't take damage and crash into the ocean. X made sure to use moderate bursts to avoid overheating the gun or it would leave them temporarily open and defenseless against an onslaught of attacks. After several minutes of shooting and flying around in the sky, something humongous appeared out of nowhere and caught both hunters by surprise.
"Wha-? What IS that thing?" X asked as the unknown aircraft came into view, but soon regretted asking that question when a familiar laugh filled the air and rang in both his and Axl's audials.
"Well, X! Prepare to be sunk!" Sigma barked at the pair before training the air carrier's guns at them.
"Remember, Sigma," one of Sigma's lackeys warned him about the vehicle. "It is not yet complete. Handle it gently."
"Silence, you bucket of bolts!" He roared at robot to shut up before turning his attention back to the hunters.
"Looks like we gotta beat that thing to get by," Axl spoke determinedly to his more experienced partner. "You ready for round 2, X?"
X nodded to his ponytailed partner, "Ready anytime, Axl."
"Go! Fire all weapons!" Sigma yelled and soon an aerial battle began between the three of them with missiles flying and colliding into each other, thus creating a miniature smokescreen.
The leftover smoke did make things a little hard to see, but it wasn't too much of a problem for both Maverick Hunters to hit their targets. Even when Sigma moved his oversized carrier around to try and deter X and Axl, Axl managed to turn the jet around to face it so the Blue Bomber continued to shoot missiles. X eventually destroyed something on the craft which made Sigma growl in annoyance.
"You fidgety little blue runt! I'll get you for that!"
The taller reploid was determined to not let them pass to Spagonia alive even if it killed him, but he knew when back off to live to fight another day if the odds didn't turn to his favor. Apparently, the blue Maverick Hunter did enough damage to put the aircraft in critical status but it was not over yet. After several more shots, both he and Axl had forced their enemy to retreat as they emerged victorious.
