Simon was anxious for the evening to come, he sat on the grass near the football pitch. Tonight was the night that he would be matched with his roommate, the person he was supposed to spend the next eight years sharing a room with. Simon glanced at the sky, blue. He looked at the grass, green. He stared into the forest, brown and hazel. Every magician was missing a colour, the colour they were missing was the colour of their soulmate's eyes. Simon could see all the colours though, he assumed it was because he probably had normal parents, or maybe because he didn't have a soulmate. It bothered him a little that he was different. When the Mage asked him what colour he couldn't see during one of their discussions about magic Simon was confused and worried, but the Mage assured him it was nothing to worry about. Simon worried anyways.
Baz looked at the perpetually grey sky as he walked through the Watford gates with all the swagger of an eighth year even though this was his first year. He waltzed up to the weeping tower and started introducing himself to teachers as "Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch, son of Natasha Grimm-Pitch" they already knew who he was, he was destined for success. Baz made his rounds getting to know all the important people and making sure they knew him. He met with some of his friends and had tea in the dining hall. It was veering into nighttime when the students were all called out to the field for the casting of the crucible. Everyone filed out onto the lawn.
Simon was already out on the lawn when the students were called out, his stomach twisted as he watched the Mage perform the magic rituals that went along with the matching of roommates. people started moving towards each other shaking hands with their new roommates, Simon didn't feel anything at first. Suddenly he felt a tug in his stomach that led to the left, he followed it.
Baz felt a pull in his stomach leading to the right of where he stood he straightened his back and followed it gracefully. He walked towards a skinny boy with golden curls and baggy jeans.
Simon stumbled forward letting his stomach pull him towards a tall boy with black hair and a perfectly knotted tie. When they were only a few inches apart Simon noticed the boy's eyes were a particularly interesting colour, they were like metal and cloudy grey all at once. Simon glanced up at the sky and noticed the stars started looking brighter, shinier, the cutlery on the tables outside shone brightly. Simon was seeing a new colour, a colour he didn't even know he was missing. Silver.
Baz was as shocked as Simon when they made eye-contact, Simon's eyes were so beautiful, they were a cool colour, but somehow Simon made them look warm. They were slightly flecked with grey and green. Baz took a sharp breath in when he looked at the lights hanging over their heads, tiny lights that looked like dragonflies, they were the same colour as Simon's eyes, they were beautiful. Baz realized that this was his missing colour. Blue.
Simon put out his hand for Baz to shake, the pulling feeling wouldn't stop until they shook hands. Baz took his hand tentatively still shocked.
"So I guess we're roommates, and also apparently soulmates," Simon said awkwardly.
Baz looked at Simon's beautiful eyes again, he was going to have no trouble falling madly in love with this boy.
