It's been 3 weeks since Roberts disappearance. Lately, it's been all over the news, the police frequently show up to the school to ask students who were close to Robert some questions. Some students think he ran away, others think he committed suicide. But the teachers have been trying to get everyone to go on business as usual; as if nothing happened.
Dakota swiftly finds her way through the halls to get to her lunch table. She wasn't able to eat this morning considering she woke up late. Laurissa and Louis are already at the table when she arrives. "Hey guys." Dakota says. Laurissa gives a weak wave while stuffing a few chips in her mouth. They smell like barbeque. Dakota rips her lunch bag out of her backpack and takes out her ham and cheese sandwich. Dakota looks at Louis; He's playing a game on his phone, like usual.
A few minutes later Alexander and Maralyn joined the group and everyone is talking among themselves. Except Dakota. She usually just likes to listen and not join in on the talking. She's always been that way, never in the spotlight; never a leader, just a follower. And she was okay with that.
Suddenly Louis jolts up. "Guys! I almost forgot to tell you!" He says excitedly. "So you know how I got to school late? Well when I was walking to class I saw the principal walking quickly with a group of police men. So I decided to follow them... they were heading down to the basement from what I could see."
The group looks at him puzzled. "Are you sure?" Laurissa pipes up. "Yes, I'm positive. They were heading right in that direction. That has to be enough proof that he really did go down there." He exclaims. The group is silent. "That's not complete proof though, what if they're checking there just in case? Or maybe they're putting more security, who knows? This can be nothing more then some evidence." Alexander says.
The bell rings and everyone starts packing up there bags. "Hey guys, why don't we go to my place after school?" Maralyn suggests. Alright, I'm down." Laurissa shrugs. The rest of the group nods or mumbles "Okay". The group separates in different directions to there classes. Dakota's the last one packing her stuff. She thinks back to the conversation. The basement. God, that stupid basement. It's all people ever talk about nowadays. Ever since that kid disappeared people have been weird about the rumor. Dakota still can't believe that the rumor has been around for 12 years at this damn school; pasted down from class to class. But yet, no one is stupid enough to check if it's really true. It irritates her.
She makes it to her class; Gym. She sighs as she enters the locker room. The rest of the girls are getting dressed and gossiping. The 'popular' girls are, of course, applying more mascara. Dakota never understood why mascara was such a huge deal to those girls. And it seems like it's only this school where the girls are obsessed with it; She has always been horrible with make up.
She does the combination on her lock, and with a click it opens. She grabs out her white shirt and black shorts, slipping into them. The bell rings again and most of the girls head out of the locker room. "Crap." Dakota mumbles to herself. She quickly ties her shoes; No time to put up her hair today, unfortunately. She slams her locker shut and hurries out of the room.
