Chainsaws were invented around 1780 to aide in childbirth. It was used to help with symphisotomy, a procedure where doctors remove bone cartilage and bone from the birth canal to widen it whenever the baby is struggling to get out.
At the time the procedure was used, pain killers weren't widely used and it'd cause excruciating, slow, and bloody pain.
Then came a person who decided that chainsaws could help with trees, as it could easily cut through bone. So then it evolved into the instrument we know today.
