The water shimmers
above my head
as I float deeper
and deeper
into oblivion.

The sun's rays catch me
and reflect off of my skin;
my hearts pounds heavily
through the cages
that are my ribs.

My head is finally above water
and I choke on my own breath;
I've been kept underwater for so long
that I've forgotten that lungs
are meant to be filled with air.
