It was quiet with only the sound of water dripping from pipes resonating through the alleyway. The adolescent stumbled through the pathway his alcohol-influenced mind making him this way. His mind was filled with thoughts of his parent's criticism, the reason he was how he was at the moment. These thoughts only made him bring the bottle of clear, bitter liquid to his mouth and gulp down a few times.
Next, to the garbage bin close to the exit of the alleyway laid a small, petite girl trying to get some sleep with only a ragged blanket to protect her from the cold night that was so slowly coming alive.
She heard the stumbling and laughter and peeked her head out to see the young boy who looked to be in pain.
Not physical pain, but mental pain.
The one she knew some about.
"Hey," she whispered but her voice fell on deaf ears.
"Hey," she said a little louder as she stood up.
She decided to follow the young boy worried for his safety in the dark abyss she called a night. She watched as he stumbled out of the alleyway and slowly followed behind him closely careful not to get caught though it didn't matter as the boy was too drunk to notice her.
"Do you need help?" she asked when she saw him hunch over and groan.
"nugkkps," he mumbled but the girl didn't understand his own drunk interpretation of no.
"Here let me help you," she said kindly reaching out to help him up but her hand was harshly slapped away making her wince.
"I said I don't need your fucking help," he groaned as he slowly got up and continued walking hoping the annoying girl got the message.
But she was too naive, too selfless, too worried.
So she followed.
She watched as he carelessly walked onto the road, stumbling his way across.
"Hey, watch out!" she screamed to him as she saw the light of a vehicle coming towards him.
Her words were again ignored so she ran towards him and pushed him, with all the might she had in her malnourished bones, out of the way.
She smiled as she saw him fall to the grass covered ground on the sidewalk.
The driver in the vehicle eyes widened in shock and fear as he tried to hit the brake but it was too late.
His vehicle hit her making her gasp at the impact, her body tumbling on top of the car and hitting the opposite side of the ground in seconds with glass embedding her skin.
The driver scared of the consequences drove off as the girl laid on the cold concrete ground gasping for air.
The young boy who had blacked out when he hit the ground stood up and continued his stagger home.
His drunk mind didn't notice the small gasps for air the girl let out her fragile body.
He didn't notice the amount of blood pooling around her body by the second.
He didn't notice that girl who just saved his life was left all alone to fight for her own.
Like she was used to.
