"Of course I love you Betty, but I can't give you the answer you want." Archie stared up ahead at the girl next door. Without a word the girls eyes shifted away from him as her mouth cringed up. Even in the night, even how far apart they stood, Archie can see the tears that built up in those beautiful green eyes of hers. The red haired boy took a step forward wanting nothing more to comfort his best friend however, she responded in taking a step back.
A heartbroken Betty looked at the man she loved one last time before turning around to go inside. Archie, burdened with with remorse, watched, desperately wanting to call out to her but remained silent. Betty was perfect. He was far from it. He didn't deserve her, he thought to himself before stocking off to his house.
Once inside the comfort of her own home Betty quickly made her way towards her room, hoping to avoid her noisy mother who would be thrilled to say Archie was no good for her or her heart.
Kicking off her shoes and slipping out of her dress, she went to her vanity and started wiping off her makeup. As she removed the signature look of Betty Cooper off her face, it was replaced with a broken-hearted human with pale features, tired eyes, and a quivering lip. Just as tears began to spill once again she turned away and got up, finding some pajamas to get into.
Archie, walking into his room, threw off his suit jack and plopped onto his bed reflecting over the night. He couldn't stand the thought of hurting Betty. The look in her eyes will haunt him for the rest of time. Not wanting to leave things as is Archie slid his phone out of his pocket and shot his next door neighbor a message before he got up to glance out his window.
Archie: Can we talk?
A few minutes passed.
Betty: What's there to talk about?
Archie: I hate that I hurt you.
Betty stared at his last message, typing a response and then erasing it. She repeated that process about five times.
Betty: I'm fine Archie.
She locked her phone and tossed it on her bed. Lifelessly Betty walked around. Naturally she paced around her room whenever things clouded her mind. It was very much a "Betty thing." At least that's what Archie thought as he gazed at her. Obviously she lied; she's not fine.
With a heavy sigh he laid back down. Again he thought, he didn't deserve his best friend. Especially after kissing the new girl in town with full knowledge Betty was sitting down just beyond the closet door.
Archie never understood his own feelings towards Betty. She was undeniably beautiful and kind. It's only logical that he would like her. However, he also liked the attention from other females. Which again, is logical, for a boy his age. But Betty has always been by his side. She was the person he could count on being there whenever he needed the company.
At this moment, all Archie could understand was he did not want Betty Copper out of his life.
