The next day, I called each of my classmates and told them to come to my house for an update on what had happened the night before. I still couldn't get the image of Talon laying dead on the ground out of my mind. It was burned into my memory and I didn't think it would ever leave.
When everyone arrived, I pulled out the papers we had stolen from Boser's office.
"Okay everyone. I have some big news. First, we were able to grab the letter Charles told us about, and were even able to grab some other papers as well," I held up the papers. "But, as some of you may already know, Talon was killed." This sent the room into an uproar.
"How? That doesn't make any sense! No one told anybody about what you were doing," Walker blurted. "And why would someone want to kill any of us?"
"I really have no idea, Walker. But we can't stop Operation Freedom now. Now we have a murderer on our hands," Chloe replied, still seeming to be affected by the previous night's endeavours.
"But it's too dangerous! What if more people die?" Lynn said fearfully.
Blaire countered, "Chloe has a point. If we stop now, a murderer will still be on the loose."
I took charge of the situation. "I think for now we should continue in the operation. If anyone is fearful and doesn't want to be a part of it, they can leave, but I want to catch the killer." Everyone nodded. "Now that everything is in order, I saw we look at the papers we managed to snag." I pulled out the papers and everyone gathered around.
David read the heading of the letter, "WIO. Worldwide Illuminati Organization," and recoiled immediately. "WHAT? He's in the Illuminati? I thought they were fake!" he gasped. The rest of us stared at each other with slack expressions. I thought, This is crazy! I never thought it could be possible.
"This only partially solves our mystery," Chloe stated. No one responded.
"I think we should take this to the police," Anne finally said.
"What do we tell them, though? We need an Illuminati member arrested? That sounds stupid," Charles retorted. "I think we should do this ourselves."
"But how?" Anne replied with a raised eyebrow.
Thomas's face lit up like a lightbulb. "How about we draw Principal Boser into a trap and get him to admit to the murder?" I nodded slowly. It seemed like a risky but effective plan. But something didn't click right. Wait! How does he know who committed the murder? No one saw the suspect.
"Thomas, How do you know it was Principal Boser who committed the murder? Even Chloe and I didn't see who it was," I asked quizzically.
"I just feel like he's the one who did it. Who else would do that? It was in his office," he swiftly responded with a shrug of his shoulders.
"That's true," I pondered what he said. "I think we should go along with Thomas's plan. I think it just might work."
"Everyone in agreement raise his or her hand!" Blaire commanded. Everyone's hand went up.
"Okay. Since everyone agrees, we can go ahead with the details. Thomas?" Chloe inquired.
"Here's what I was thinking. I was looking through some of the papers we stole, and he and the Illuminati seem to have a monthly meeting where they exchange information. It occurs on the same day every month. I have no idea if he will show up this month because of us stealing these papers, but it's worth a try," Thomas strategized.
"When is the meeting?" Chloe asked.
Thomas glanced down at the letter for a second, then focused on Chloe again. "It seems to always be the thirteenth," he answered.
"Huh. I guess it would make sense that they would pick the thirteenth. Unlucky number. I just hope it ends up being unlucky for them and not us," Victoria mused.
"Yeah, I hope so too. When we go to this meeting, what are we going to do? Jump out and say, 'Gotcha!'? We need a foolproof plan." Blaire stated pointedly.
Thomas pondered for a moment. "The papers say the meetings are in the woods by the school at 2:15 AM, so I think we should hide before the meeting starts. We can take a voice recorder and record everything they say."
"That seems pretty smart. I don't see too much risk in it," I agreed. "Who's going to go, though. Surely we don't need everybody."
"I think everybody should go. Then if anything goes wrong, we all have the information, and can bolt in different directions. They surely won't be able to catch all of us," Thomas countered.
Chloe nodded. "That make sense. I think that's what we should do. I just hope no one gets caught." She looked at me inquisitively.
I took the queue. "Let's do it then. Everyone meet at the school at 11 PM tomorrow. Park your cars down the road and walk the rest of the way. That should leave us with plenty of time to set up before the meeting," I said, bringing an end to the meeting. Everyone said goodbye and left. This is going to be scary but awesome. I thought anxiously. I hope nothing goes wrong this time.
