"Some part of you knows that. Some part of you knows that. Some part" the voice in Liam's head echoed over the sound of his phone ringing. Liam blinked, rubbing his head. Somehow he'd ended up in the ditch.
"You have three new voicemails" his phone chimed. He looked around him in the cab of the truck. Everything seemed to be in tact both with his body and with the things in the truck. He didn't see any blood when he pulled his hand from his head. His phone started ringing again. He began searching for it. It had slid on the floor under his feet. Anna's ID picture, one of her centered that he took of her against him, was displayed on his screen. He answered just before his phone kicked over to voicemail.
"Hey."
"Liam! What happened?" Anna was frantic, her voice making it obvious that she was crying.
"What do you mean?" He tried to lie.
"I mean you never called me when you should have gotten to work and I've been calling you over and over. No one's here. I'm calling Janet and telling her I'm closing the store. Where are you? I'm going to come and get you."
He sighed, looking around. "I don't know what happened. I'm down the road not that far away I think. I'm in a ditch on the right hand of the road. Facing away from town."
"Thank you. I'll be there as soon as I can," she said, hanging up the phone. A few seconds later his screen popped up with a text from her. I love you.
He sent back the same words, a smile spreading on his face as he leaned back. His truck was still running so he turned it off and began checking his messages. When he finished he made a call to the person he was going to help that day and let them know what was going on, with a promise to reschedule or, if they'd prefer, the number for a contact of his who could help them while he was away. They said they'd rather wait for a time when he was available and he gave them his thanks for their understanding.
By the time he got off the phone and looked in his rearview mirror Anna was almost to the truck. After the changes they'd gone through because of Adam, the real Adam, both Liam and Anna had gained a lot of nice abilities. Better sight, better hearing, and much better endurance being only a few of the perks.
Liam unlocked the truck, grabbed his keys, and got out just in time for Anna to plow into him. He stumbled, but she kept both of them from falling over. After a few minutes of standing there in each other's arms Anna reached into Liam's pocket and took his keys. "I'm taking you home. Now."
He nodded and opened the door for her. She shook her head and looked around, making sure no one was about to see what she did. She picked Liam up and put him into the cab, even going so far as to buckle him in. He laughed and relaxed when she got in the cab. "I love you" he whispered, zoning out.
The next thing he knew he was being carried into the house.
