The Fight

"You know, I can't stand you sometimes!" Dean turns away from Castiel, his teeth grinding together in anger. It's just another pointless fight, yet again.

"Well I can't stand you at all!" Cas shouts as he clenches his fingers into a tight fist. Even though it's painful, his nails bite into his palm, and Castiel doesn't care at this point.

"You know what, Castiel? Fine. Leave me alone then, if you can't stand me!" Dean spins around with fury, throwing his hands in the air. The look of pure annoyance and anger almost scares Castiel. This isn't the Dean he knows and loves.

"This isn't over, Dean!" Cas stares Dean down, his blue eyes cold and uncaring.

"Papa? What's wrong?" A small voice sounds from the stairs. Dean and Cas whip around to see their tiny 4-year-old looking back at them with concerned eyes. "Daddy?"

"Go back to your room, Joanna, it's alright," Dean says in the calmest voice he can muster, forcing a smile. Cas nods to her and she turns around, rushing back up the stairs on her small feet.

No faster than she is out of sight, Dean and Castiel are neck and neck again.

"If you wouldn't be such an ass!" the angel yells at his significant other.

"Me, an ass? Look in a mirror!" Dean growls the last part, only a hair's width away from the temptation to hit Castiel across the face. Although, he would never strike Castiel, no matter how angry he gets.

"I hate you! Just leave me alone!" Castiel storms up the stairs with tears pricking his eyes like needles.

"Fine!"

The words hurt, but not as much as they would if Dean wasn't mad.

Later in the night, Dean absently walks upstairs, forgetting that Cas is up there. Cas is still angry. As soon as he remembers, he stops mid-step. How could Cas be so angry with me? Am I really that hard to be around? There is a soft sound from down the hall; Dean moves closer to find out what it is.

"Papa, do you still love Daddy?" He hears Jo ask Castiel. Poor thing, having to put up with these fights between the people she loves most. Dean's heart skips random beats.

"Of course, honey. I will always love daddy, I always have," Cas's tender voice is shaky.

"Why were you yelling?" The innocent girl questions. "Why are you crying?" That nearly makes Dean's heart stop in his chest. I made Cas cry? My Cas, my angel?

"It's okay, Joanna," Castiel sighs, but it sounds like he's saying it more for himself.

Suddenly, Dean's chest is too heavy, like there's an elephant sitting on it. Maybe I really am a jerk. I'm terrible, I made my love cry.

Before any other words can be said, Dean silently sneaks down the stairs, feeling like crying himself. Maybe a warm cup of tea will help clear my mind. Dean warms up a mug of water, and just as the microwave beeps annoyingly, tiny arms are wrapped around his leg. Looking down, Dean sees his daughter staring back up at him. Is she mad since I yelled at Cas?

"What's wrong, baby?" Dean asks with a tender smile. He lowers himself down to her eye level, and she wraps her tiny arms around his neck.

"Please don't be mad at papa, I don't like when you fight!" she pouts up at her father.

"Okay, I won't fight anymore," Dean sighs, holding Joanna to his chest. He adds in a playful tone, "Now it's time for bed, so hurry upstairs!" Dean doesn't let her go without a kiss to the forehead and a short 'I love you'. Forgetting about the tea, Dean just lies on the couch and falls asleep before he can let his thoughts get to his brain.

Meanwhile, Joanna sneaks into Cas and Dean's room to shake Castiel until he wakes up. "Jo, it's time to sleep," Cas mumbles into the pillow he is holding. It may or may not be Dean's pillow.

"I just wanted to say that daddy still loves you. He looked sorry for yelling," Jo whispers. Those words make the wounds in his heart feel a little better.

"Thank you, baby. Now it's late, so you should be asleep," Cas whispers with a kiss to Jo's forehead. Once his daughter is out of sight, Cas sinks into the bed, unsure of how to sleep without Dean by his side.

The former angel tosses and turns in the sheets, feeling them move easily without Dean here. This bed feels too big, too empty, Cas thinks to himself. Before he knows it, he is downstairs and standing next to the couch where Dean sleeps soundly. Without much hesitation, Castiel lowers himself down until he is resting with his head on Dean's chest, legs tangled together as if they don't really matter. Dean stirs, but only to drape his arm around his angel's torso. Cas smiles to himself and laces his slender fingers with Dean's. "Goodnight, angel," Dean whispers. Cas smiles and falls asleep content. They couldn't stay away from each other, no matter how angry they were.

When Cas wakes in the morning it's because of Dean's soft lips on his forehead and strong arms holding him close. "Hey," Dean mumbles, fingers sliding through Cas's always-messy hair. "I'm sorry, Cas."

"Me too. Let's not fight anymore," Cas grumbles. Dean runs a tender finger under Cas's eyes where there are streaks from tears.

"Okay."

"I have to go to work, are we going to make breakfast?" Dean asks and licks his lips, thinking of his favorite meal of the day. Cas only kisses him in response and rolls to the side to stand up. One follows the other into the kitchen, and before long, Joanna joins them. During breakfast, Dean makes sure not to let go of Cas's hand. When it comes time for Dean to leave, he pulls Joanna and Cas into a heartwarming hug. As he is pulling his jacket on, Jo's voice stops him.

"Daddy, you forgot something!" she exclaims as if Dean had forgotten the most important thing in the world. His eyebrows furrow in confusion, and he looks to Cas for help. Unfortunately, his husband's back is facing him instead of bright blue eyes.

"What is it, Jo?" Dean smiles encouragingly.

"You didn't kiss Papa before you leave!" Jo throws her hands in the air.

"Oh no! I guess I'll have to fix that!" Dean grins and strides back over to his love. Cas is smiling and blushing as Dean attaches their lips in a quick kiss. "I love you," he whispers. That makes Jo smile and clap her hands. "I love you too, Jo." And with a ruffle to his daughter's hair, he strides out the door a happy man.
