“Riley, are you sure you’re okay?”

“Riley, are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yes, mom. I’m okay. Quit asking me that. I’m sick of hearing those words.”

“Don’t use that tone with me, young lady. It’s my duty as your mother to find out if you’re okay. You were in a coma for three days, dammit!”

Riley sighed and looked over at her mom. She felt bad for speaking to her mom like that. She didn’t know what to do with herself ever since she woke up yesterday. She didn’t know what to think or how to feel. “I’m sorry mom.”

Her mom dried her hands on a dishtowel and smiled. “I know, honey. The past few days have been hectic for both of us.”

“Tell me about it.”

“Are you sure you don’t remember anything from that night?”

Riley flinched. She remembered, alright. Her freaking hands were sparkling. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw sparks. Angry and red, waiting to burst from her fingertips. Then there were those eyes. The bane of her predicament.”

“Riley?”

“No, mom. I don’t.”

She sighed. “The doctors don’t know what happened to you. It’s like your body went into shock or something. It completely shut down.”

“Mom, stop worrying. I’m fine.”

“Oh, baby, are you sure? You still look a little pale.”

“Mommm!”

“Fine. I just can’t help myself.”

BEEP. BEEP.

Riley jumped up. “Sara’s here.”

“Okay, honey. Have a good day at school.” She walked over and pressed a kiss to her forehead. I love you.”

“Love you too mom, bye.”

******

“Riley, we’re here.”

“Okay.”

“What's going on up there in that gigantic head of yours?”

“Nothing, I’m good.”

“Is this about what you told me last night.”

Riley was regretting telling her about the sparks. Sara was her close friend, but Milo was her best friend and she hadn’t spoken to him since.

“Riley?”

“No, please don’t bring it up again.”

“Fine, my lips are sealed.”

Riley climbed out of the car, took a deep breath, and choked. A cloud of smoke filled her line of sight as High-grade walked pass.

“Hey, Riley. I heard you took one for the team and ended up in a coma.” High-grade puffed at the cigarette hanging from the corner of his lips.
