Riley pressed a hand over her chest

Riley pressed a hand over her chest. Crap, that was close. She totally didn’t feel bad for leaving that guy to face the principal alone. Nope, not guilty at all.

“Miss Daley, you’re late.”  Mr. Shaw peered at her under his glasses.

Riley jumped. “Uh… sorry.” Riley cringed at the squeakiness of her voice.

“Don't make it a habit, young lady. Find a seat.” He dismissed her with a flick of his hand.

Riley made her way to the back of the class to the only seat available. She felt the hard stares on the back of her neck. As she attempted to slide into the chair, something hit the side of her head and bounced onto the table. It was a piece of paper rolled into a tight ball. She looked around, trying to find the person who threw it.

“Miss Daley, please take your seat we haven’t all day. If you’re ill, see the school nurse. If not, please refrain from holding up my class.”

Her cheeks grew warm. The man didn’t like her. Grabbing the paper off the table, she sat down.

“Who wants to go first?” Mr. Shaw asked.

Riley looked up. What the hell? She thought.

“Psst!”

Riley looked over at Mikaila.

“Lost?” she asked

For the quietest girl in the class, she sure was talking a lot, Riley thought.  She smiled, bucked teeth and all. Riley tried not to stare at her teeth, which was proving hard. Mikaila was pretty, with straight black hair and chestnut skin—at least when she wasn’t smiling. Riley didn’t know why she wouldn’t just fix her teeth.

“He’s talking about the assignment,” Mikaila whispered.

And she forgot all about it. Riley sighed, “I didn’t do it.”

She rolled her eyes. “You’ll be fine. He’ll probably give you a pass since you know…” Mikaila trailed off.

Did everyone know what happened to her? Jeeze. Just imagine the stares she would get at lunchtime. Riley sighed. “Mr. Shaw hates me.”

Mikaila frowned. “He hates everybody.”

“Miss Mikaila Bond, how about you?” Mr. Shaw boomed, casting a stern look at Riley.

Mikaila groaned. “Fine.” She looked at Riley and rolled her eyes.

“Good, that’s the spirit.” Mr. Shaw clapped.

“Go, big teeth,” somebody shouted as Mikaila got up.

The class laughed, and Mikaila’s shoulder slumped.

“Bellberry, I won’t tolerate that kind of language in my class. Go see the Headteacher.”

“Aw, Sir,” Bellberry whined. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
