The summer after I turned 9 and school was out, my mom and step-dad announced that we were moving back to Airdrie. I wanted to see my dad again, but of course, he'd moved to Mexico and if it wasn't for that we would have stayed in Moose Jaw. Leaving Moose Jaw was harder than leaving Airdrie since we'd lived there for over 2 years and I knew that I would miss Mila.
We packed our trailer and drove all the way back to Airdrie, which isn't as far as you might think, but felt far to me. My little half-brother was almost 3 and was on my nerves the whole entire way back. I wanted to yell at him but I didn't want to upset my parents. This was the second time where I felt silenced, only this time it was probably for the better.
School started up again that fall and I was going into grade 4, back in my old school. When I went back I thought that I would recognize more people. But, many moved away, and even more moved in. My best friends from first grade didn't let me back into their group which hurt me a lot. They acted extra rude to me, as if leaving them in first grade had been my fault.
Then, about a month into the new school year, a new girl moved in. Her name was Jade and the second I saw her, I wanted her to be my friend. I went up and nervously talked to her the first day she was in our class and was so excited when she started to follow me around. Finally, I had a friend!
Jade and I became inseparable throughout grade 4. We had sleepovers on many weekends and absolutely loved singing together. My first duet in front of an audience was with Jade in our grade 4 class talent show.
Grade 4 came to an end and so did my friendship with Jade. She left for sports camp over summer and came back with a new set of "sporty" friends.
Then it was middle school. When I started grade 5, I went to a new school that was fed from 2 different elementary schools in our area. I also started taking piano that year and my mom bought me a keyboard to practice on since she knew that I loved music. Piano lessons were incredible except that I had to miss a lot of lessons because my mom was busy dealing with work and a toddler.
At the start of grade 5, I was back to not having any friends. There was a pair of girls in my grade who were quiet and seemed approachable, so one day, I went up to them and asked, "Can I join you at recess?"
They let me join in with them on the swing set at lunch and that changed my life. These girls' names were Emily and Vanessa. We became even closer than I ever had with Jade and soon we were stuck like glue. It's weird when you get new friends and realize just how much better they are as friends than any other friends that you've had in your past. That's when you know that you have good friends.
