Chapter XVI
Anna
John was pulling me along, running away from the church like the soldiers were hot on our heels. Not that I was behaving calmer, I kept glancing behind us every couple of minutes to make sure that we were not being followed. My mind was racing as well, remembering what Claire was shouting when we left. Vindicator, that was what she yelled, vindicator. What does that mean ?
"...vindicator, vindicator, vindicator..."
It seems that I wasn't the only one that couldn't forget the one word Claire was yelling as we left the church. We got to the cottage and John shoved open the door and pull me in and slamming the door behind us with such force that everyone looked up. By everyone I mean Will and John's aunt who were busy sitting at the table having supper.
"Where were the two of you and why are you holding hands?". Will was giving us such suspicious looks he was reminding me of John for a second until I realized what he said. Holding hands. What is he talking about? John lifted our hands and that's when I realized that he didn't even know that he was still holding my hand. Claire must have scared him as well.
"Oh nowhere really we just took a walk, I was showing Anna the village and it got too dark to see and I didn't want her to stumble, the ground is very uneven around the cottage. It's not like I want to hold hands with her". I don't know why the last part of his sentence hurt my feelings. I know he was lying about where we were and what we were doing, but the last part sounded like the truth. Why doesn't John like me.
"Would the two of you want something to eat, there's some broth and I baked bread earlier" aunt Evelyn asked. My stomach choose that moment to rumble and that gave her my answer. John gave a crooked grin "That would be nice". I could hear them talking while we were eating, but I was quiet, my mind churning. Vindicator, vindicator. I need to see Claire again, but I'm still not sure if I can trust her. I need to find out what she meant.
"Anna, Anna are you listening to me?" I look up to see all three of them staring at me. "I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention". I gave them a small smile, half-heartily. I'm not in the mood for any conversation, I have to make up my mind about Claire. "I wanted to know if we could go out tomorrow, go for a walk and have a picnic by the stream". Will was smiling at me waiting for me to say yes. "That's an excellent idea Will, we can go early say about nine and spent the day". Will gave a uncomfortable chuckle and says "I was thinking that Anna and I could go by ourselves".
That when I remembered that I still need to talk to Will, about the kiss and the fact that he's like a brother to me. "I think Will's right John, we can come back early thou and go for a ride in the afternoon". Not that I think that Will would want to spend any more time with me after our talk. John had a scowl on his face as he got up and left without saying anything else. Will on the other hand was chatting amicably for a couple of minutes not even noticing that I wasn't paying attention.
"....Anna, Anna can you hear me..."
"...we have to talk..."
"...we need to meet..."
"...Anna talk to me..."
"...I know you can hear me..."
"...vindicator, Anna..."
