Chapter XX
John
I barely made it onto my horse and somehow managed to follow Anna and Damien. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw what Damien did to Vince and those soldiers. Not because of their frozen state, but that too. What had me in a state of shock was the fact three years ago the same scene led to me having to flee my family and home. Because that was the time I got blamed for causing a similar action to the one we just left.
Flashback :
I wanted to learn to control my ability so I was behind a shed trying to start a small bonfire next to the woods. It was all going according to plan when the wind shifted and the shed caught fire. Now this was not my first time with the experiment so I had a bucket of water close by. It didn't take me long to put the fire out, but by the time I was done the damage was clear.
Half the shed was in ruins and the other was blacken beyond recognition. Still trying to come up with an explanation for the fire I heard some noise like someone applauding and that was when I met Russell. Little did I know that would be the beginning of my trouble.
Russell saw what happened, how I conjured a flame from nowhere and set the shed ablaze. At first he was helpful telling the villagers that somehow a candle must have fallen over during the night and that he ,with my help, extinguished the fire.
I was so relieved when it seemed this would be the end of it, but for Russell it was just about to start. I owed him, especially because the villagers are sure to view me with antagonism and I would probably have to pay for the damages. I could never have imagined what Russell had in mind about how I should repay him.
He would break into people's houses and I would be the look-out and when they returned I was suppose to light a small fire to warn him or as a distraction, whichever suited the occasion.
At first I didn't see the harm in just warning Russell, but it was never-ending. It would seem my debt would never be repaid. We moved from village to village until three years ago we came to a small town and the richest merchant was sure to set Russell for up for life. He agreed that, that would be the last time that I would have to help.
That might have been what let to disaster striking that night. Russell was inside for barely an hour when the merchant returned. I was already starting to cause a distraction when out of nowhere we were frozen, exactly like Vince and the soldiers. Because I wasn't an alarm, but a distraction that night meant that Russell and I was stuck inside.
I somehow manage to use my power to 'thaw' myself out before anyone could see me, but that meant that I didn't have enough time to help Russell. I had no choice I had to leave without Russell. The strange thing was thou that the house was still robbed and Russell was still inside frozen when they discovered him.
Russell obviously thought that I double-crossed him and gave me up. There was wanted posters of me all over the village and I barely made it out. Russell was send to prison for two years and when he found me a year ago he wanted his share of the merchandise. After I explain that I wasn't behind the break in Russell immediately calculated that would mean that I still owed him then.
I was done with that life-style and after warning Russell of this I left and met up with Will.
End of flashback
Anna
I couldn't believe what I just saw and yet could it really be that extraordinary. It would also explain the instant dislike John and Damien had for each other. Fire and Ice polar opposite.
"Oh my word Damien, how did you do that?". I seem to be able to do so much, but I have no control over if or when it happens. I looked over my shoulder at John and he had a murderous look on his face. Deciding to give him some space I focus all my attention on Damien.
"...it just takes practice..."
He finally answers and I was a little puzzled when I notice that Damien was giving John the same exact glances.
"...please you have to tell me..."
"...you have to tell me how you do it..."
I really didn't want to do this in front of John, I do not what him to find out that I can read minds and I'm not sure how he's going to take it if he finds out that Damien knew before he did. He really wasn't happy that Damien knew about Hastings when he didn't know.
"...John is upset with me and not you..."
"...do not take it personal..."
I have to make peace between these two before it escalates. That's when I remembered Vince and the soldiers and the fact that they found us so quick. Claire told me that they would only get here in the morning yet an hour after I left they tracked us down.
I slowed down a bit so I can talk to John "Vince and the soldiers found us so fast? How do you think they did it?". That seemed to snap John out of his thoughts and he takes a minute to answer "They've been on our trail for months now, they were bound to find us sooner or later".
That would make sense if it wasn't for the fact that Claire told me they were a day behind. "Claire said they would only get here tomorrow. Nevertheless they still knew which direction we took how do you think they did that?".
John looked at me and squinted slightly "What are you trying to say Anna? Are you saying I led them to you? All this time and I thought you trusted me. I guess your new friends Claire and Damien are the only ones you can trust. What I don't understand is how you can trust Claire or even Damien that you met an hour ago".
I couldn't believe that John was being like this. All Claire and Damien did was help all along. Why wouldn't I trust them.
"It seems your boyfriend has an issue with me". Without us noticing Damien slowed down as well and were just ahead of us within earshot. "I'm sure he doesn't" and "Keep your nose out of my business" could be heard at the same time.
"Damien how long will the soldiers stay like that, we should really try to hurry. Claire is already waiting on us" At this John just snorts and Damien answers "For about an hour and its just been a couple of minutes. Even for some time they will have difficulty moving so I say they might only be able to follow us by morning".
This made me think, perhaps that is what Claire saw would happen that's why she said they would follow in the morning, but if that was the case why didn't she warn me. At this thought I couldn't help but sigh, I'm becoming as bad as John mistrusting everyone and everything.
That still didn't explain how they knew which direction we took and if they did follow John then they would have found us sooner. That's when a chilling thought came to me. It couldn't have been John, that leaves only one person who knew which way we went.
IT WAS WILL WHO TOLD THEM WHERE TO FIND US.
