Chapter 2

It is near Halloween and yes we Lycans or rather Lucraniërs just love Halloween. My Dad, the Uncles Eli, Tariq, Danté, Lucca, Micheal, Liam, Wayne, Sergei, and Vito carve big scary faces on the pumpkins. My Mom with help from all the Aunts, Diete, Arné, Nienke, Elena, Sienna, Emma, Sage and Charlotte hung bats, spiders and skeletons in the trees in the gardens of my grandma Esmeralda's holiday Resort. My great grandparents give this masquerade ball every year and everybody tries to outdo each other with the best costume. I need to think of a costume and I am not in the mood for this. Normally Armando, Anika and I go together, but I am quite certain they will not like it if I tag along this year. Mom is waiting for us after school and just as I thought, they talk about costumes. "I'm going to drop the three of you off at the shops and you go and find your costumes. I'll see you guys at Fernando's when you're finished with your shopping." She gives us money and Anika is very happy since her Mom gave her some money this morning for a costume too. We get off and Anika and Armando walks into the first costume shop hand in hand. I look around but find nothing so I look for them and see they have a couple of costumes they are looking at. "Hey I'm going to the next shop I don't see anything I want here. They just nod and I leave. I walk around a bit and cannot seem to find anything when I see Gavin standing near me looking at me as if he's waiting for me. "Hey Caity, I heard your brother saying you guys are shopping for costumes today, so I thought you and I can hang out together." I glare at him. "Sorry Gavin I'm really not in the mood for company today and I'm meeting my mother in a few minutes anyway." Before I can move he grabs me and pushes me into a rack of costumes and tries to kiss me, but I head butt him and kick him one good kickboxing kick in the stomach. "If you touch me again you'll regret it Gavin..." I want to walk away, but his next words stops me in my tracks. "You don't think I didn't notice the looks you and that Brother of Anika give each other Saturday. If it was him trying to kiss you, you would probably have let him kiss you even if he's so much older than you. Is he your life mate?" I give him a death stare. "Are you out of your mind Gavin? I know Diego since I was born; they are house friends of us. My private affairs don't concern you, but since you asked...no...I don't know who my life mate is and at the moment I don't care who he is. I'm 15 and still have to finish school; I don't have time for boyfriends. Stop harassing me, you are Armando's friend; don't let me tell my Dad about this fiasco, you will regret it and Armando will never be able to let you into our house again." I turn around and walk out of the shop not in the mood for anymore nonsense. I go and sit on the terrace of Fernando's Pizzeria and order myself a coconut milkshake. That is where my Mom finds me and I know she is going to interrogate me. "Caitlin, did you find a costume yet?" I sigh. "No Mom I couldn't find anything, it's all the same as every year." I look out over the mall's courtyard and see my Dad and Diego coming our way. O dammit not now. I am not in the mood for another interrogation by my Dad and especially not in front of Diego. Thinhs between us are making me feel things that I'm sure I/m not supposed to feel yet and especially for someone other than my life mate. My Mom sees them too and wave at my Dad. It's a shame to see how he smiles when he sees my Mom. It is as if nobody else exists. I look towards Diego and his eyes are definitely on me too. His eyes become a dark blue and I look away. When they sit down, he lands next to me and while Mom and Dad kisses he smirks at me. "Hello Caitlin, long time no see, did you perhaps try to hide from me for some reason?" I look at him and make a face. "Hi Diego, yes it's been a while and don't be ridiculous, why would I try to hide from you? I have enough trouble to hide from the stupid friends of my Brother." Luckily for me Dad and Mom are with us again and Dad looks thoughtfully at me. "If you sit here I assume you have a costume?" I roll my eyes and get a look from Mom. "No Dad I don't and I'm not going..." He interrupts me immediately. "Don't you dare roll your eyes at me and don't think that you are not going to the masquerade ball young lady. You will be there and in a costume of course even if I have to get you one myself." I hold up my hand. "Wait you didn't' let me finish Dad. As I was going to say, I am not going in one of the same old costumes as every other year. These shops should get new stuff Dad, everything is so outdated. I will make myself something or ask Morgana's help." With that, my Dad is happy and we order pizza just as Armando and Anika come in. We shift around the table and Diego moves into the seat with me, so that Armando and Anika can sit together on his seat. He is actually for a change very careful not to touch me and I am a bit angry. The wind picks up and clouds starts to swirl and I think about something else to stop my anger. My Dad and everyone at the table look at me and I smile innocently. "Nope don't look at me, it's probably some other witch who's in a bad mood." I drink my milkshake and ignore them all, until Armando brings up the school brawl of a few months ago. "You remember that Jason you gave a knee in the groin, he left our school a week after you did that to him. I wonder why? Some kids said he had a blue eye and a broken arm when he came by the school's office. You didn't' go out afterwards and fixed him up did you Linny?" I look aghast. "Are you crazy, why would I do that? I gave him what he deserved by the way. If I used any kickboxing on him, he would still have been in hospital and me probably in Juvie. I do not know what happened to him and I frankly do not care. I had black and blue bruises on my arms for two weeks. He probably tried a pass at someone else's girlfriend this time and some dude fixed him up." Diego smiles and my Dad look at him. "Do I see some approval of Caitlin's lost of control at school in your eyes Diego?" He still smiles. "Sorry Sir, but someone who treats girls like that, should get a beating and if it's by herself I'm definitely going to approve that, even if she lost control at a place where she shouldn't' have lost it." My Dad laughs now and suddenly looks straight at me. "Yes I see your point Diego and it's true, but still...Caitlyn what did you do that you have a red bump on your forehead?" I look away and think of the waterfall near our house, and how beautiful it is, it helps me not to lose control. "Um...nothing dad..."My Dad's eyes turn amber. "Do not lie to me Caitlin, I'm no fool. You lost control again about a half an hour ago, it wasn't your mother or me or Armando...you lost it about something...you better start explaining..." I look away and suddenly a hand touches mine underneath the table and gives it a squeeze. There are a lot of tingles and I feel a calmness entering me. I think my eye color changed because my Dad's eyebrows go up in a questioning way and he looks at my Mom and back at me. I close my eyes and takes a deep breath before I open my eyes again and I realise all eyes around the table are on me. "Linny what happened just now? You seem as if a strange force took a hold of you and your eye color changed to amber." I know exactly who let my eyes change and who made the strange warm feeling that came over me as Diego laces his fingers through mine. I feel totally calm and strangely ready to take on the world. "I'm fine Dad, it's nothing. I'm sorry about the lost of control, but Armando's dear friend Gavin cannot seem to leave me alone. I had to use a little bit of force to make him understand what I'm trying to tell him for the past weeks. I head butted him and gave him a good kick. Hopefully he got the message now." My Dad is furious now and the wind pick up until my Mom touches his forearm. My Mom turns her head towards me and I know the question even before she can ask, but Diego asks the question next to me. "What did he do to you Caitlin?" I take notice of Diego's frown and the color of his eyes, when I turn my head towards him and I just know he's pissed. "He um...e...pushed me into a rack full of costumes and tried to kiss me..." Now I notice my parents' strange look at us and I gulp when Diego asks the next question and looks at my lips. "And did he...um...kissed you?" I shake my head and look away at my Dad while I smile. "I head butted him before he was near enough and then I kicked him into another rack of clothing and...I told him if he ever touches me again he'll regret it." My Mom looks from Diego to me, but doesn't say a thing and I feel how Diego drops my hand suddenly and put his hands on the table in front of him. "Well at least you taught him a good lessen Caitlin. Is this Gavin the same one at Armando's party and the one that tried to kiss you at kickboxing a few weeks ago?" I could kick Diego for saying that because my Dad looks like his going to murder someone. "He did what? And why didn't I heard of this a few weeks ago Caitlin?" I roll my eyes and give Diego a death stare. "Because I handled the situation myself Daddy. I cannot run to you each time a boy gives me trouble, then I would be in your office everyday." Khan looks at Diego. "Well Sergeant, I think I have a very special job for you for the next few weeks. But we can talk at the office about that. Linny since when do the boys harass you so much?" I pull up my shoulders. "Months Daddy...I think...but Armando's classmates have other ideas about me and I'm not sure where they get it. I only chat with them when they come to the house or once in a while when they and Armando sit with me and Anika during lunch." Dad nods and changes the subject. I hear them talk about the masquerade and I wonder what I am going to do about a costume. I will have to talk to Morgana over the weekend. Saturday afternoon I am lying on my bed and sulk about a costume. I take my diary and want to write in it, when I notice a small envelope. I open it and almost hyperventilate. How did it get there? There is a note inside and my eyes feel like they are going to pop when I read it.
