Can Life be this Unfair?

Chapter 4

Ashton P.O.V

"YOU WHAT?!"

My best friend Todd stared at us, at me in particular with wide eyes.

"Shut up Todd!" Liz whispered looking around, I looked around also to see if anyone had heard but luckily everyone else was more interested in their food than us right now.

We were currently in the cafeteria eating our supper. We had decided to tell only our closest friends about our little runaway.

It was final and decided, Liz and I were going to run away together, it was the only choice I saw we could take in order for us both to be together.

In front of us sat my best friend Todd and Lizzie's best friend Stephanie. These two were the only ones who would know about our escape plan!

Todd was looking at us as if we were crazy, his eyes were wide open and he hadnt closed his mouth yet. I looked at Stephanie and she had the same expression on her face. I frowned momentarily afraid they would be against the idea.

Stephanie saw me frown and she composed herself first elbowing Todd in the ribs so he would do the same. "Please you guys, we're only telling you because you're the closest friends we got. Promise you guys wont speak a single word about this with anyone" Lizzie pleaded quietly.

They both were speechless and I started to feel annoyed at their silence.

Stephanie was the first one to speak as she looked from Elizabeth to me. Her eyes relaxed slightly "This is a joke right?" she asked quietly.

I shook my head "No Steph we are being completely serious!!" I said.

"But...but...how? You know we cant escape from here Ashton! Its the only rule Mrs.Harrison has! That must be for a reason right?" she asked with wide eyes.

"I dont know why thats her only strict rule, but rule or not we have to escape" I whispered.

"And how are you planning on doing that Sherlock?!" Todd finally hissed.

"Easy" I replied "we jump the fence, cross the woods until hitting the road and we are free! Simple as that" I shrugged.

Liz sighed next to me "You guys this is serious, Ashton and I really want to be together, we cant wait for a year for me to be 18, and he only has three days before Mrs.Harrison makes him leave, we meed to escape together" she whispered, "Its our only choice" she said seriously.

Steph looked at us for a while before smiling "We'll help you" she declared.

What?!" Todd had found his voice again, Stephanie turned around and glared at him "What do you mean what? Of course we need to help them Todd!" she hissed.

"Steph are you listening to them! How are they going to run away?!" he whispered loudly.

"Shh Todd keep your voice down" I reminded him.

"Exactly! Thats why we need to help them!" Stephanie frowned at Todd.

"But-"

"No buts Todd! We need to help them do this!" Stephanie said.

"Yeah but" Todd stopped once she narrowed her eyes at him and he sighed turning to us, "How are you guys going to do this little escape thing?" he asked "There are guards everywhere!" he said trying to be quite.

I smiled "Now now Todd it wouldn't be escape if we just went through the front gate would it?"

He frowned, clearly lost so I told him our plan. "OK Todd listen up because I'm not repeating myself" he nodded, a serious look on his face.

"Ok you guys here's the plan. Tomorrow night we are going to the bottom of the hill at midnight wait for the electricity to turn off, and then we'll jump the fence and cross the woods all the way to the road and then we'll ...I dont know what we'll do after that, but I need your guy's help. I need you two to help us as a lookout, if you see any guards, which I really highly doubt, you just need to distract them while we escape" I said.

"But you guys how will you jump if the fence is electric?!" Todd asked looking at me as if I were a crazy person. I probably was crazy for thinking about this plan, it was a strict rule here to have everything under control. No one could escape the orphanage, and if you tried and you got caught the punishment was never good!

"The fence is shut down at eleven when everyone is sleeping" Liz replied.

"How do you know that?" he frowned.

"Dont tell me you've never sneaked out before" she teased.

"No I have not! Im a good boy actually who doesnt think about doing bad things, bad things that can become worse if you get caught" he frowned.

I rolled my eyes and frowned back at him.

"Listen, we dont need your help if you dont want to give it to us Todd" I snapped.

"It's not that its just that...this seems a little crazy! You know how Harrison gets when she finds someone tried escaping! She has this really bad temper when it comes to the woods and God knows why but all we know is that the result is worse for the person who tried to escape once he's brought back! I wouldnt want something worse happening to you two" he said looking at Lizzie and I.

"Todd we appreciate the worry, but we need to do this" Lizzie sighed sadly.

"Are you sure? Think about it man," he turned to me "We could take care of Liz, you wouldnt have to worry about anything, we'd keep her safe until she turns 18 and can go out" he said begging to look sad.

I looked at Liz and knew I wouldnt be able to survive without her for a whole year!

"No!" she snapped, "Todd thank you but I cant...I just cant leave Ashton!" she said grabbing my hand tightly.

"But what about wolfs and vampires and zombies?!" Todd asked me.

"Come on Todd.. zombies? In the woods?!" I asked him shaking my head. Trust Todd to think about zombies in the woods. "Alright alright not the zombies, but what about wolfs?!" he asked again.

"Todd there are no wolfs here so chill" I told him trying to look calm. I dint know if there was wolfs in the woods. If there was it would be a major problem!

"Yes there is!" he said almost sounding like a little kid. "Remember back in October when those kids were found dead!?" he told me again.

I think he was trying to convince me first, since I was the one with the idea.

But to be honest nothing was going to change my mind! I was going to escape with Liz no matter who put themselves in my way!

"Todd that was just a rumor someone made up! That was a prank for Halloween" Liz tried reasoning with him.

"No! Remember we saw the bodies Ashton? they were all..-"

"They were all nothing" I cut him off before he could finish. I didnt want to remember that image.

"Please just dont go. What if something happens? My brother instincts tell me this is not a very good idea!" he whined looking at me again.

I sighed, no matter how much we argued he wouldnt be able to convince me! "Todd this is final" I told him sternly, "Tomorrow we leave and nothing will stop us!"
