Fifteen seconds. I thought to myself as I stared at the group of boys just sixty feet away. I just need fifteen seconds to face my fears. I had just graduated high school only six hours prior to this moment and my whole class is celebrating their last day as high school students at an amusement park. The park was reserved just for us, and so the place looked deserted, the only people around were me and them. It is a minute before midnight, and I swore to myself to do something completely crazy before my high school career ended.
Maybe it’s too dark for them to see me. I tried to convince myself. I may never ever EVER see them again. Taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly through my nostrils, I took a step forward and the clock began to tick.
One.
I prepared my stance, widening my feet slightly, rolling my shoulders back, and straightening my spine.
Two.
I glanced over my shoulder nervously to my best friends. Light and dark hair alike flew as both nodded vigorously, urging me to continue.
Three.
I turned back around. Cupping my hands around my mouth, I hollered, “Hey Aiden!” and brought them back down.
All of the boys stopped talking and turned their heads in my direction. One in particular leaned back slightly to see me from around a guy blocking his view. I suddenly envisioned eyes of an intense blue, darker than denim, and my brain suddenly stopped functioning.
“You probably don’t know me,” I began, my voice only slightly louder than normal. It didn’t matter, however; I definitely had all the boys’ attention. “But high school ended, so it doesn’t even matter what I say.”
Ten.
“So anyways, I’m kinda really attracted to you even though I don’t know anything about you. You’re cute and I probably won’t ever see you again, okay bye!”
Fifteen.
I rushed out the last bit, only to turn and begin running, my friends following, laughing with their heads thrown back. Breathless, I did the same, even crying a “WOOH!” as I jumped in the air. The bells signaling midnight rang through the park as I hit back down on the ground, continuing to run. As my friends and I sprinted towards the largest rollercoaster, terrifying yet thrilling against the night sky, I thought to myself, I did it! And I’m no longer in high school!
What is this? Cinderella?
