"Wake up, sleepyhead!" I heard mom's voice at 6:30 am in the morning. " Your gonna be late for work."
"Mommmmm!!!" I yeldd.
I worked as a part time life gaurd at the beach. I didn't really enjoy it because there was always that one person that always used to steal my spotlight.
I rolled off my bed and slowly dragged myself downstairs. The first thing that hit me was the sweet and sour aroma that arrested my senses the moment I stepped through the kitchen door , giving the air a warm and comfy feeling.
I saw mom rush to the table holding a plate full of pancakes and another full I bacon.
"I made your favourite sweetie!" Mom said in a big warmful smile.
"Thanks mom" I said sitting down next to my dad on the table.
"Morning champ!" My dad said as he put his newspaper down and looked at me.
"Hey dad, how are you" I replied.
"Couldn't be better, sitting next to the two most beautiful girls in the world." My dad replied glancing at my mom and I.
I finished eating my breakfast and headed upstairs to go and get ready for work.
****
"Focus" I reminded myself, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
"Gotta stay sharp." I took a sip of my hot black coffee from my plastic foam cup and leaned back in one of the white, wooden lifeguard chairs at Tower 2. It was an esspecially bright Tuesday morning; Ellah , who also worked here, I literally forced her to come. Ellah was off getting a bottle of water from the main lifeguard tower, so for the moment I was alone at my post.
The beach was already crowded with people, thier beach blankets and towels stretched up and down the shore like an enormous patchwork quilt. The morning waves were unusually calm, barely cresting before gently gliding to shore.
"But mild days like this can be deceptive," I remembered. During training Coach had told us time and again about what could happen when a lifeguard let's down his or her guard, even for a minute. And calm days always made it easy to let down your guard.
"Hey!" I said anxiously, my attention drawn to a bright yellow speedboat that had appeared on the water almost out of nowhere. The skipper was obviously joyriding, manuvering the boat in wide arcs so it would cut back on its wake, causing the boat to bounce violently on the water.
"That hunk of metal is way too close to the bathing areas!" I shouted with alarm.
I sat forward, my heart thumping against my chest, and grabbed my binoculars training them on the speedboat. Three young men were laughing and gesturing as they clowned around at the steering wheel.
"Selfish jerks" I muttered. Suddenly the boat swerved wildly. "Ohh no!" The boat was heading directly for shore, running at full speed. I glanced quickly at my binoculars again. It was obvious that none of the people on the speedboat were paying attention to where they were going. The speedboat was now barley thirty feet away from the outmost group of swimmers. Among them, was a little girl floating on an inner tube. I felt my guts twist in my stomach and fear gripping me by the neck. "If that boat doesn't veer off, it's going to hit that little girl!" My mind raced.
The sound of my whistle alerted two other lifeguards standing by that there was trouble on the water. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the flash of red streaking down the beach. It was my coach and trainer-Coach Bensave. But it was no use. Bensave's position on the horizon was too low to catch the attention of the guys on the speedboat.
"This is it, Abby, I thought to myself. I'm the only thing standing between that boat and total disaster."
Almost on pure instinct I grabbed the emergency flag and waved it up in the air, praying that the driver or anyone on board would see it and turn around.
"C'mon" I whispered.
I noticed how selfish people were. They were all swimming to shore but they left the little girl playing in her inner tube.
With not more than 9 feet away from shore, one of the passengers looked up and saw the emergency flag .
I pointed at the little girl and in the split of a second, the boat driver turned the boat around very unsmoothly.
I felt relief wash over my body. Up until i saw the little girl still in the water. I quickly ran into the water and automatically started swimming. I ran to the area where the girl had been. All I saw was the inner tube. I dived down into the water and came back up for precious oxygen but with no luck.
As I came up, I saw a head of black hair and red trunks shoot up from the water about halfway to the shore. Coach Bensave had the little girl clutched firmly in his arms.
I tried to relax my knotted stomach. I knew that saving lives was the bottom line but I couldn't help but feel irritated that coach had stolen my thunder once again. But if it wasn't for my quick thinking, the girl might have not been saved at all.
As my exhausted legs found the ocean floor, I saw the first aid rush to Coach Bensave as he carried the unconscious girl up to shore. I quickly pulled the rescue buoy, coiling the rope around it.
"Ava!Ava !" The little girls mother cried as Ben and the first aid began working on the child. I jogged up to the crowd in just enough time to hear the little girl cough- she was out of danger!
"Ava !" The mother exclaimed, her voice now flooded with relief.
"Great teamwork" I said to Ben.
"If I hadn't come along, you'd still be playing duck duck goose in the water" Ben replied bitterly.
"She helped a lot" Ellah appeared from the crowd that had formed around us.
"Blowing a whistle to signal others to do your dirty work isn't what we call teamwork." Ben said in defence.
"Are you serious!" I shouted. "If it wasn't for me, the little girl would have been mincemeat by now!"
The little girl started crying when she heard me say this.
"Abby!" Ben hissed ,scowling at me. "She's shooken up enough as it is. She dosent need you frightening her."
The crowd started murming bad things about me. "Really Abby! Get back to your post, Ellah and I have this under control." Ben snapped.
"Im sorry" Ellah mouthed. I totally understood, she had to follow orders from her boss.
My mouth dropped open as I was shoved aside by the crowd. I'm a nobody to them, I thought to myself. Just another girl in a swimsuit. I turned and stomped angrily back to Tower 2.
"How can this be?" I glowered. " I did help save that little girl. What am I , invisible?"
Updating soon 😊😊😄 and a shout out to Bensave who didn't believe I wrote this😢😆😆😆😂
