The 100,000 trees that fill the Meiji Shrine in downtown Tokyo create an atmosphere that is as if I am in a different world. The city sounds are gone, and the scent of nature fills my lungs as I walk around the beautiful space with my husband.
"It's mad how peaceful it is here." Harry says softly as his thumb rubs against the top of my knuckle. The patterns he draws against my skin calm my soul from the anxiety I feel while being in a country I've never been in before.
"I agree. This is a place I could explore for hours." I stop and look at the garden that surrounds the massive tree at my side. The flowers are exquisite, some of the most beautiful I have ever seen.
"This is a good place to write songs. Quiet, peaceful, one of my favorite places in the world." Harry releases my hand as he squats down to the level of the plants, lifting his camera from around his neck. I watch as he carefully snaps a few pictures of the beautiful pink and yellow flowers that I know he probably wants printed on a suit. "I wrote Today More Than Yesterday while sitting on that bench right there." Pointing across the walkway towards a bench that is placed so perfectly, surrounded by trees and gardens, and I understand how the inspiration for creativity would flow out of him like the aroma of a freshly bloomed orchid.
Lacing his fingers in mine, Harry continues our walk through the beautiful shrine. This is my first time in Japan, and I can see why Harry loves it so much. The beauty that surrounds us is something that I have never witnessed, and I am thankful for the opportunity.
"She is wiggly today. Must be excited her daddy has a little break in his schedule." I pause our walk as my free hand rubs along the side of my small 22 week bump, calming our daughter down with the touch of my hand. Harry finished his first leg of this tour in Tokyo last night. I flew in about a week ago to watch him perform in Asia, and it has been amazing. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happy for his two and a half week break.
"Her Daddy is excited to have a break. I've missed my girls." His statement hits my heart hard. Harry loves his job, and has been very blessed. But boy do I miss him when he is away. I miss that smile, and his cute dimple that shows only when he is experiencing his happiest moments. I miss his jokes and his kisses. I miss his snores and his curls. I miss it all.
"Hey," I turn towards my husband, leaning in close, hovering about an inch away from his pink lips. "I love you." I take his lips on mine, kissing him softly. His hand cups my cheek as he deepens the kiss, letting me know that he loves me too.
"I want to show yeh somethin'." Grasping my hand in his once again, Harry leads me down a path and into the middle of the forest. We enter a building that is quiet. Nobody speaks above a whisper and the feeling I get is one of calm and warmth.
Leading me towards a table, Harry purchases two small plaques, handing one to me. The walls are covered in thousands of similar plaques, all littered with Japanese characters.
"This is an ema."'Harry whispers in my ear. "You come to the shrine and write down your hopes and wishes for the future." He pauses for a moment, before whispering in my ear again. "When I wrote Today More Than Yesterday, I came into this building and made a wish."
"Do you remember what you wished?" I ask, curious as to what his hopes and dreams were at that time in his life.
"Mmhmm." He hums softly. "I wished that we would get married, and we would start a family of our own. That our love would last longer than any love has ever lasted. And that yeh would know that even though I'm not there, I love yeh more each and everyday."
"Harry..." my voices cracks as my emotions take over, bringing tears to my eyes. Harry wraps his arms around me, bringing me close to his chest.
"My wish was granted." Harry kisses the top of my head before continuing. "So today, I want us to write down our hopes and wishes for our baby girl and for our new little family."
Releasing me from the hug, Harry picks up two pens, handing one to me so I can write. We take our time as we both write out the hopes we have for this little one.
My sweet baby, I wish that you will feel all the love we have for you. That you will never go a day without knowing how much we care. I wish you will have the ability to not only love yourself, but others as well. I hope we will have adventures as a family that will impact your life in a positive way. I love you, baby girl, and I hope you will always remember that. Love, Mum.
I finish my wish, and place it on a hook along with the thousands of hopes and dreams. I watch as Harry finishes writing the dreams he has for our little one, and my heart melts into a puddle the size of Asia.
Baby girl, I hope you have your mother's eyes, full of kindness and love. I wish that you will have her heart as well, one that is always open to loving and accepting everyone. I hope that you will know how deep our love is for you, and that you can be anything you want to be. I wish that you will have an understanding of our neverending support and love. I hope we can be best of friends, that we will share memories that we can keep close forever. My wish for you is that you will see the beauty in yourself and In others, that you will encourage others to be kind and loving. We love you so much, and cannot wait to meet you. All the love, Daddy.
He signs his name, capping his pen before hanging it next to mine on a hook. We stand for a moment, both silent as we wrap our arms around each other. Japan has been a very special place to Harry for a while. Today, it became a special place for me as well. A place where we encouraged our baby girl to be herself and to love the world, without judgement but acceptance instead. A place where we expressed our unconditional love and support for this little girl. A place where I know deep in my heart that I love this man and this little girl we created together. Forever.
