Neuro-link begins in three, two, one...

Nevada Jonnes stepped lightly on the dusty, creaky floor of the ancient temple. Her companion, Frost, followed closely behind. Nevada gave the ninja expert/field guide a look as the torch he carried nearly set her favorite fedora on fire.

"Sorry," whispered Frost.

Nevada gave a sigh and motioned towards the long, dark hall with her chin. Frost, being the guide, stepped forward first and right into a wad of cobwebs. He let out a shiver and a small squeak.

"Oh, calm down, Frost," said Nevada as she stepped by him. "It's just spiders."

"Just spiders?" he said in disbelief. "Have you seen them? They have just too many legs and eyes to be trusted."

"Let's go," Nevada said with a sigh.

After a slow hike down the corridor, the two arrived at the central room. At the other end of the ballroom-sized hall sat the prize: the Golden Palm Tree. It was believed to be worshipped by the inhabitants of this tropical forest. Only twenty feet of checkered path stood in their way.

In her excitement, Nevada stepped towards the Palm Tree idol. Luckily, Frost stopped her. He pointed towards the small, round openings that lined the walls. "Poison darts," he said.

Nevada gave a quick nod. "How do we get passed them?"

"My ninja senses tell me that if we step on the black squares," Frost pointed down to the checkered floor, "we should be all right."

A few minutes of playing Hopscotch and the pair reached the tree idol.

Nevada inspected the pedestal. There had to be another trap. Taking out a magnifying glasses, she began to inspect the relic and pedestal. She quickly found the weight sensor. If she removed the idol, the sensor would activate whatever trap was in store.

She straightened back up and turned to her loyal companion. "How much do you think that idol weighs?"

"How should I know?"

Fortunately, Nevada Jonnes had upgraded her phone and gotten a better service plan. She logged onto the Reef messaging app. Pretty soon, she was in the middle of a video call with Shreya_VA , the leading expert on jewels and other precious metals. Shreya, after doing some quick calculations, said they would need to replace the statue with something that weighed 8 pounds and 3 ounces. This just so happened to be the size of their trail mix. Jonnes wanted as little weight as possible on them since they would be hiking and climbing.

Frost held his breath, as did Shreya—who was still online, as Jonnes slowly moved the bag of trail mix towards the golden figure. Sweat began to form on Jonnes' forehead as she thought about the many ways this could go wrong. Jonnes was about to slide the bag into position when she stopped. "Frost, you're the ninja. You should probably be doing this."

Frost tapped his chin. "You're probably right. Scoot over."

Frost leaned close to the pedestal and closed his eyes. For a moment he seemed to be saying some kind of mantra. Then whoosh, the idol was in Frost's hand. The group cheered their victory, but it was short lived as the pedestal began to lower. A series of clanks and whirls followed.

"How is this possible?" cried Nevada. "I measured specifically 8 pounds and 3 ounces."

"Uh..." said Frost. "I might have gotten hungry."

Jonnes' anger at Frost was short lived as the racket stopped. All was silent for about three seconds then a rumble vibrated through their feet. A door above them slowly began to open.

"Bye," said Shreya before hanging up the call.

Jonnes and Frost gasped as a giant popcorn kernel began rolling towards them. "RUN!" shouted Nevada Jonnes.

The two rushed through the deadly traps, because...well, it was either the traps or the kernel. They dodged darts and spikes and spiders all the while the kernel was right behind them. Nevada thought the tight spaces of the hallways or the low entrances would stop the unpopped popcorn, but nothing could. The massive seed smashed through obstacles and seemed almost to have a personal vendetta against Jonnes and Frost.

Finally with one final leap, the duo jumped through the temple's main entrance. Thankfully, the kernel stopped, trapped by the stronger walls of the outer temple layers. Frost was so thankful he momentarily forgot that they were covered in spider webs and one of the arachnid architects was inching towards his ear.

"Excellent work, Dr. Jonnes," came a familiar voice.

Nevada hopped never to hear that voice again. It haunted her every waking moment. The one person that constantly beat her to every discovery. "Sofe." Professor KlaraSofe , ringleader to a group of relic hunting mercenaries, laughed as a group of natives with spears surrounded Frost and Nevada. "What could you possibly want with the Golden Palm Tree?"

"The same as I wanted with the cursed Cactus Ring of Tutankhamun. You see, Dr. Jonnes, there is nothing you possess that I can't take away." Sofe nabbed the palm tree relic and began to inspect it as she joined the natives. "Kill them."

At this moment, Frost realized just how close the spider was to his ear and let out a scream that could break paper. He jumped upright and began jerking and trying to smack the spider. This erratic display confused the natives.

"You're a genius, Frost!" said Nevada and leapt to her feet. She grabbed Frost by the arm, and they ran.

Sofe laughed as the pair ran deeper into the forest with the natives in hot pursuit.

Nevada and Frost eventually made it to the clearing where their pilot, the famous Meghana_violet , waited. Well...read while she waited.

Nevada exited the forest waving her hands and shouting, "Meghana! Start the plane!"

At first Meghana was irked by the interruption to her reading; but once she saw the mob of angry natives, she jumped into the cockpit and started the engines. The plane, The Mighty Violet, began taxiing towards the terrified duo. As the plane passed, Frost and Nevada grabbed hold and climbed aboard. Soon after, the plane was airborne.

"Whew, close one," said Frost.

Nevada then let out a scream. "Meghana! There are wasps in the plane!"

Meghana rolled her eyes. "It's just my pet wasp nest. Show some backbone, Nevada."
