When Bella and I walked into the venue for the prom I knew tonight would be the night we kissed. That right. We hadn't kissed you. We'd been dating nearly three months and still hadn't had a lip to lip kiss. We met up with Cass and Ellie at our table. They had their boyfriend on their arm and they both looked at me like I was a freak.
"Bella is date boys," I said, "we're taken."
I smiled and grabbed Bella's hand. I had gotten her a red corsage and made my own bow tie. We sat at the table and I looked at my tank.
"This thing is so annoying, Bell."
"I know Lia."
I side smiled at her and rested my head on her shoulder. She reached over and grabbed the candidates slip and looked down the list.
"Oh my god."
"What?"
"We're on the ballet. Lia we're on the ballet!"
I grabbed the paper from her hands and nearly screamed.
"Cass. Ellie. Did you guys.."
"Maybe."
This time Bella and I both almost screamed as we hugged our friends. Everyone went out onto the dance floor but I had to stay sitting because of my lungs being suckish.
"Why can't you guys just pull it together for one night," I asked looking down at where my lungs were.
When they plaid the first slow song of the night, Bella came and dragged to to the dance floor. We stayed closer to the edge of the floor as we swayed to the rhythm of the song. Three months. I was in love.
"Alright alright," Mr. Duncan said as the song ended.
I moved quickly to get back to my seat before I got trampled.
"At each seat there is now a voting card. I want you all to check off the pair that you think should be crowned the king and queen of this years prom!"
Everyone roared in excitement. I checked off mine and Bella's name on the card and waited for them to come around. They started the music again and Bella sat with me.
"I'm sorry if I'm ruining prom Bell."
"If anything you've made it 2000% better."
That made me smile.
"Let's dance."
I took her hand in mine and took a deep breath before removing the nubs from my nose and the tubes from around my neck. I wheeled my tank under the table and went to the dance floor with Bella. She looked at me like I'm crazy but danced with me anyways. No one really does real dancing at these things. Its mostly fist pumping or weird moves that they've come up with. Bella and I mainly swayed our hips and played with our hair as we fake danced. Sure it was hard to breath but it was so worth it. Bella was smiling and happy. They took a while but after a half an hour of vote counting Mr. Duncan had taken the mic again and was up on the stage next to the DJ.
"Alright everyone settle down. I've got our results for the prom royalty. I grabbed Bella's hand and pulled her back to our table. If we won I wanted to have to have my tank.
"Are you guys ready!"
Everyone screamed but me because my breathing was going back to normal.
"Alright! By a surprisingly high landslide, your prom king and queen are..."
He opened the envelope and smiled.
"Lia Johnson and Bella Lancaster!"
My eyes opened wide and I looked at Bella who had grabbed my tank and hand. We walked up to the stage and I took my tank from her. I was still in shock as they gave us our crowns and Bella her flowers.
"Would either of you like to say anything before you have your dance?"
"I would," I said taking the mic from Mr. Duncan, "first, I wanna thank all of you. This is something I thought would never happen because of my sexuality and standing up her today with Bella at my side and I can honestly say this has been the best day of my life. Bella, I love you."
We'd said we were in love with each other once but never said I love you.
"May I have this dance," I asked as Me. Duncan took the mic and Bella took my hand. I lead her down the stage stairs and to the center of the dance floor. I threw my oxygen aside and removed the tubes from my head and threw them too. I had my hands wrapped around Bella's waist and she had her arms around my neck. They played 'She Keeps Me Warm' by Mary Lambert.
"I love you, too, Lia."
I smiled as she rested into my shoulder. But as the song ended she lifted her head and I cupped it in my hands. I leaned in. And I kissed her.
