Chapter One

Monday

I leaned my arms against the counter of check out #4. The store wasn't busy at the moment, so there was nothing for me to do.

I looked over my shoulder and Ashton was leaning against register #3 with his face in his hands. "Ash." I called. He lifted his head from his hands warily and he nodded at me. "I'm bored. Do you know where Michael and Calum are?"

"Nawh, they haven't texted me yet." Ashton responded. I let out a groan in response and then walked out of my station.

"I'm just gonna walk around." I told him. "I'll be back in five, I'm sure you can handle the crowd."

"Luke, c'mon." He complained, the whine evident in his voice.

"I'll be back soon." I chuckled before jogging away so he couldn't change my mind.

I roamed the halls of the store. There wasn't anyone around so I increased my pace to a jog as I heard hushed whispers. I hadn't seen anyone come in. I quickly made my way around one of the shelves and found a trail of Mountain Dew leading to the bathroom. The trail was messy, meaning it was the work of Michael Clifford. He was my idiot of a friend, and his pranks were stupid and he never put enough effort in them to make it neat. But the bottles were no where to be seen, meaning Calum Hood was with him. Calum was somewhat of a neat freak, he didn't like things to be dusty, and he hated when people walked inside his apartment with shoes on.

I continued following the liquid towards the doors of the bathroom. At the end of the path, sat a small Dora doll. I had no idea what they were up to, but I walked to the doll and picked it up.

"Swiper no swiping!" I heard Michael scream and turned around to see him jumping out from behind a shelf. Calum followed behind him with a smirk settled on his face.

"Says the boy who died his hair black down the middle." I commented, throwing the doll at him. Calum was laughing at the two of us. "Seriously though, you guys are going to need to help me clean this up."

"I have a mop right here." Calum spoke, grabbing one from the aisle they were just in.

"Where did you get that?" I asked, taking it from his hands and starting to mop up the green liquid from the floor.

"Calum got it from some closet. I told him to leave it for you, but him being the neat person he is, would've mopped it up if you had come any later." Michael laughed.

Calum shot him a glare. "I thought we were on the same team." He pouted.

"Every man for himself." Michael added and sat down on a package of paper towels placed on the shelves. You'd be surprised at how many people do that. As I mopped, the three of us all made fun of each other and Michael crushed a few of the paper towel rolls, which I'm making him buy.

Then my walkie talkie turned on. "Luke, I need your help at the registers." Ashton spoke.

"On my way." I spoke back.

"Okay guys, I need to go help Ashton, don't make a mess while I'm gone." I told them as I began walking back towards the registers. I hadn't even realized how long I spent back there.

When I finally got back to the front of the store, there was only four people in line. I walked behind check out #3 and turned the light on. "Some of you guys can come over here." I told the shoppers.

"Were you lonely over here Irwie?" I chuckled, scanning an old lady's items.

"No, you know I'm slow at this." He laughed and I rolled my eyes even though he couldn't see.

"Did you find everything you needed today?" I asked the lady.

"I sure did." She spoke back in that shaky old lady voice. I smiled at her before stating to bag the few items she had. "You're total comes to forty dollars even." I said.

"Well isn't that something." She commented before handing me forty five dollars. "Keep the change." She smiled before walking away with her two plastic bags. No one has ever given me tips before, but I shoved the money in my pocket and began scanning the next customers items.

"Did you find everything you needed today?" I asked.

"No, I need some help finding tampons." She spoke, I looked up and there was a girl around my age with brown hair standing in front of me. She was pretty, and short compared to my size. "I'm just kidding with you." She quietly laughed.

"Okay good. Cause I try not to go in that aisle." I laughed along. She just bought a few packs of gum and a toothbrush, it's good to see people keeping up their hygiene. "You're total comes to 1-413-537-8***." I told her, bringing my lower lip between my lip, playing with the black ring I just put in a few months ago.

"What? That's impossible, I only bought like, three things. There must be a mistake."

"Oh, no, there isn't a mistake. That's my cell number" I smirked, ripping off part of the receipt paper roll and scribbling my phone number on it. "And by the way, my name's Luke, and your real total is $10.95." I handed her the slip. She took it and began shoveling through her purse.

She handed me exactly ten dollars, three quarters, and two dimes. "Very precise." I commented. She shyly smiled at me. "Have a nice day!" I called as she took her plastic bag and began walking away. "And don't forget to use that number!"

"Smooth, Luke, real smooth." Michael commented behind me. I sent him a glare but looked away, my cheeks were probably red. Michael, Ashton and Calum were all laughing behind me, but to tell you the truth, I actually wanted her to use my number. She was witty, yet when you flirt with her, she becomes all shy and naive.
