Jake’s POV
Sat in my office in the early daylight hours, I was drifting off to sleep on my desk, only meaning to close my eyes for a few seconds to alleviate the headache I had forming from the lack of sleep. Forcing my eyes open, I pinched the bridge of my nose and pulled the bottom drawer of my desk open and began searching for some painkillers. Making a mental note to clear out my desk out, I came across several empty wrappers, 5 sets of keys to various doors of the station, a bottle of whisky, two bottles of water, an empty bottle and several pieces of cutlery before I found the painkillers I needed.
Opening a bottle of the water and swallowing two pills, I leant back in my chair and stared up at the ceiling. I had to get the rest of this paperwork finished on Lucy’s and Lizzie’s murders. I was damn sure that at least these two murders were connected and that meant that the others were too. They all progressively got worse each time. The first 2 victims got one stab wound to the chest, the next 3 victims had 2 stab wounds to the chest, and then there was Lizzie’s murder. That one hadn’t got progressively worse. Something had made the killer snap and he’d taken it out on Lizzie. Lizzie had been mutilated.
After 5 more minutes of thinking ‘til my head hurt again, I stood up from my desk and walked into the investigation room and began looking at the pictures of the victims. Other than the fact that they all lived in the same area, there was nothing obvious connecting them. And then there was the CCTV in the club. They’d all been in the same area not long before their deaths. And Danny, the club owner was acting suspiciously. I ran my hands through my hair and decided I’d go and check out Danny’s alibi today.
On hearing footsteps behind me, I turned around to see Adam, the young whippersnapper from the crime scene earlier this morning stood there with several paperwork files in his hands. When he didn’t speak immediately, I gave him a questioning look and asked what he wanted.
“Oh, right, um...The hospital have just phone and told me that a ‘Marion?’ has been brought out of sedation and that we can see her now. They said that while it’s okay to go in and speak to her, she’s still fragile and not to push her too much or she could just as easily lose control again and they’d prefer not to sedate her again.”
“Right, okay, get your coat; we’re going to the hospital.” I told him, walking through to my office and grabbed my coat”
“Me?” he followed me and stood in the doorway of my office with a puzzling look on his face.
I rolled my eyes at him and pushed past him out of the door before answering him. “Yes, Adam. You. If you’re going to be Jas’s replacement, then you’re coming with me.”
He still looked confused
“Oh, for fuck sake! Jasmine. Kidnapped. Several murders. You. Me. Find the killer. Find Jasmine. Now, come on.” And walked out the door with him trailing behind me.
The drive down to the hospital was torture. It made me wish more and more that jasmine was here. The conversation consisted of Adam talking about how he’d not long got out of university and that this was his first major case. He proceeded to tell me that he really enjoyed his time in University, but that was nothing compared to the on the job experience. I couldn’t fault his enthusiasm, but it was non-stop talking for the whole 30 minute ride to the hospital. And I barely spoke a word of it. When we pulled into the hospital car park, desperate to get out of the car and away from the closed space with Adam, I opened the door to get out before I’d even cut the engine.
