     Jake’s POV

I looked over at Adam as we drove towards the address that the receptionist gave us earlier for Alex and noticed that he looked tired. He rubbed his eyes and stifled a yawn before stretching his body out, trying to wake himself up. Thinking about it, I realized I was tired too, so I turned the car around and headed in the opposite direction.

“Where are we going?” Adam asked a few moments later when he noticed we weren’t going the right way anymore. He shuffled in his seat and looked behind us, not quite understanding what was going through my head.

“You’re tired.” I stated, pointing to his drooping eyes.

“I’m fine.” He mumbled, barely audible.

“No, you’re not, I turned the car round five minutes ago, and you’ve only just noticed because you were dropping off. We’re going to Lily’s for a coffee to wake us both up.”

      “Lily’s?”

“She’s a friend of my parents.” I admitted. “They grew up together and they’re still good friends. She owns a 24-hour coffee shop not far from here that serves the best coffee ever.”

“I thought that was Starbucks.” He half joked.

“Believe me; Starbucks has got nothing on Lily’s coffees. Jas orders two every morning.”

      “Why two?”

“I tell ya what, why don’t you wake her up one morning and see why she needs two coffees? One barely touches the sides. Two only just makes it.”

“Do you really believe we’re going to get her back alive?” He asked, and my heart stopped. I slammed on the brakes and banged my fist against the steering wheel. My head turned to look towards him and I could see fear in his eyes.

“Do you really want me to punch you? Emma’s not around this time, she’s not here to help. I swear, if you ever doubt me or Jasmine again, I’ll throttle you, Detective Hunter.” I seethed.

He opened his mouth and a small peep sounded as though he was about to say something, but he stopped himself, closed his mouth and looked in the opposite direction.

“What?” I asked, eager to hear his imbecilic thoughts once more.

He looked at his knees and took a deep breath. “What I said in the hospital about you fancying Jasmine…”

I pulled away as car horns from behind us beeped, alerting us that we were were holding up the traffic, and we instantly got stopped at a red light.

      “Yes?”

“Um, I-I’m sorry, but…” I gave him an impatient look and signaled for him to carry on. “Is it true?” the light turned green and I turned the corner to the street Lily’s was on.

“You’re cruising for a fuckin’ bruising mate, have you learnt nothing today? How many times do I have to threaten you or pin you against a wall for you to learn when to keep your damned mouth shut?” I pulled up outside Lily’s before cutting the engine and turning to him again. “Let’s get this straight, now. Jasmine is my friend, my colleague, my friend, my confidant, and…oh yeah, my friend. There is and there will be nothing, I repeat absolutely nothing going on with Jasmine and me. I do not fancy her, she does not fancy me. WE. ARE. FRIENDS. Got it?”
