Wrong Room

Freshers week was something that all students looked forward to. It was supposed to be the one thing about uni that you definitely looked forward to. It was a chance for you to make friends and get drunk, and get to know the people you would be spending the next three years with and all the worrying came after that. For Luke that was the case. It was the 3rd night of Freshers weeks and he was sufficiently drunk. It was a little after midnight and he had just come from the BBQ where his dorm mates had been.
He stumbled up the steps to his dorm and tried his key card in the front door, getting frustrated when it didn't work. Eventually someone left, giving Luke the chance to slip in. He wasn't sure what but something seemed off about the halls. They smelled weird. However he put it down to being drunk and stumbled to find his room.
Everything looked the same and Luke was too drunk to be able to focus. Eventually he found his door, flinging it open to reveal a crying girl sat on his bed. "Whoa, I'm sorry...why are you in my room?" He slurred, wobbling a little on his feet. Luke wasn't really a lightweight, but they had all been drinking since 4pm and after three days of heavy drinking all he wanted to do was crash for a few hours.
"What?" The girl croaked. Even drunk Luke could see how upset she was. There was snot dripping down her face, and he cheeks were obviously tear stained and even if he missed that no one could miss how puffy and blood shot her eyes were. "This is my room." She sniffed, clearly uncomfortable.
"Oh." He replied, seemingly shocked. "Oh God, I am so sorry! You must think I am a freak. God, this is not the impression I wanted to make on my first week. I'm Luke. Luke Hemmings. Music student." He grinned, inviting himself to flop down on her bed next to her causing her to shift uncomfortably. Drunk teenage boys were always something to be avoided. Especially when they barged into your room in the middle of the night.
She hesitated for a moment, but the look in Luke's eyes told her that he was just a friendly lad who had got lost on the way back to his dorm room. "Y/N. Dance student." While Luke had been taking full advantage of freshers week, Y/N had spent the majority of it crying in her room. She missed home and she'd had stomach cramps since she got here. Her mum had phoned her to tell her it was only stress and that the sooner she started to enjoy herself the quicker they would go, but she'd had trouble believing that, and when she'd shown up to her first class she'd caught some of the other girls shooting her odd looks and then when the teacher finally got around to watching her dance all she did was criticise her technique. It had been hard, and unlike Luke she hadn't found it easy to fit in.
"Why are you crying? I hope you don't mind me saying, but you're really to beautiful to be crying...oh god, that was inappropriate wasn't it? Feel free to hit me. I'm not so good with words." He muttered stumbling over his words. He wasn't really sure what had come over him, but there was something about the crying girl in front of him that made him feel protective and a little bit giddy.
"Luke, calm down." She managed to giggle for the first time since she had got here. "I guess I'm just struggling more than most." She admitted, shrugging as she wiped the tears from her eyes. She could feel her chest stop shaking as she managed to calm her breathing.
"Awh man how do you have time to struggle? There is so much going on! Where are your friends?" He asked looking around almost as if they were hiding in her room somewhere, causing her to laugh. "Are you laughing at me or at yourself? Because right now I am not sure which I would prefer." He frowned.
"Both. You're not going to find them in here. I don't have any." She shrugged, trying to play it off but it was really affecting her. Everyone else had made friends and she was still just the shy awkward girl that hid away in her room. She hadn't wanted to come to university for that exact reason, but her dance instructor had told her she had to go. She couldn't afford to waste the potential she had, but after being here a few days she didn't feel like she had much potential.
"WHAT?" He shouted, startling her. "Sorry. I mean, wow. You seem cool, why don't you have friends? I mean, all the other girls I've met would have gone mental at a drunk teenage boy they don't know sitting on their bed in the middle of the night." He laughed. She seemed really cool and chill, more chill than most the girls he'd met so far anyway.
"I just think I'm still in shock. You'll leave and I'll have a breakdown." She laughed.
"Well then maybe I just won't leave...wait..." But before he could even realise what he'd said she was in fits of laughter. "Okay, I will probably leave at some point. Man, I really have managed to make myself sound like a creep tonight haven't I?" He chuckled, scratching the back of his neck.
"You're alright Hemmings." She laughed. There was just something about him that put her completely at ease. There was something about him that made her feel more care free and made her forget about her problems for a little while.
"So, tell me abut yourself Y/N. You're here to dance, but what else is there I need to know? I nearly suggested 20 questions...but I am not that white boy."
"Okay well I'm a ballerina mostly, and I really enjoy reading. I miss my family a lot. I've never really had a lot of friends. I used to think I was good at what I do, but now, not so much. My favourite band is Green Day and I wish I was more spontaneous."
"Okay well I play guitar and sing and write. I don't really enjoy reading that much. I have a lot of friends but the only ones I really care about are my band mates. I was lucky enough to have my 3 best friends come to university with me. I know I'm good at what I do. Green Day are also my favourite band, and lets go." He replied, grabbing her hand and pulling her up from her bed.
"What? Where are we going?" She asked, startled.
"Spontaneous. We're being spontaneous. Come on." She wasn't really sure what to do, but the look he was giving her was so hopeful she couldn't say no. She slipped on her vans that were lying next to her bed and followed him out the door and through the school campus.
"We can't go up there!" She hissed as he tried to lead her up the fire escape on the music building.
"Yes. Yes we can. We're being spontaneous." He grinned.
"No, you're drunk and I'm the idiot who followed you!"
"That's what being spontaneous is. Common, it'll be fun." She realised that he was going to go with or without her and logically it was better if he was with someone sober.
"Luke, careful!" She called as he stepped too close to the edge.
He shook his head. "Show me how you dance!" He demanded. "I wanna see you dance."
She was suddenly feeling very self conscious. It wasn't something she was used to. She used to be confident in her abilities, but Luke's confidence in his made her feel somewhat inadequate and that coupled with her new teacher...well she wasn't sure at all.
"I won't laugh." He promised. She wasn't sure what made her do it but she did. It was the routine she was most familiar with, and one she knew she was unlikely to mess up. Eventually she came to an end and when she stopped to face him she noticed his jaw slightly slack.
"You need to be in our music video. I mean, I had an idea, but this new one trumps it. I need to run it by the guys, but would you? We're filming it next month, and it would really mean a lot to me." He spluttered, his face was lit by the smile that had spread across it.
"Are you sure? I mean there are better girls in my class and I am sure they would LOVE to be in your music video." Y/N wasn't unaware of how attractive Luke was, in fact it was quite the opposite.
"I don't want those girls though." He smirked and she blushed. She waited for him to correct his speech but he didn't. Instead he just stared at her with a determined look in his eyes. "Is it okay if I kiss you?" He finally asked, and she looked at him shocked. She couldn't speak, but somehow she found it in her to nod.
Luke took two purposeful strides forward, covering the huge gap between them, crushing his lips to hers. It was soft and purposeful. He knew what he wanted and he was going to take it, but when he felt her kiss back it was like nothing he had ever experienced. The want and the desire and the passion was so intense.
When she eventually pulled apart Luke was completely speechless. The sun was beginning to come up. They'd been out here longer than either of them had realised. "I should go to sleep." She admitted, not really wanting the night to end, but she knew that her class started in a few hours and if she went in like this she'd just be kicked out.
"Can I walk you back to your dorm room?" He asked, gnawing at his lip ring anxiously. She nodded and he held out his hand for her to take, interlocking their fingers when she did.
She could feel eyes on her as they walked through the courtyard. It was early, or late depending on who you were, but she spotted the group of girls from her dance class leering over at her. Luke clearly noticed the sneers on their faces because he stopped dead in his tracks and turned to face her, bending his head down to her own before kissing her passionately for everyone to see. "I don't think I'm ever going to get tired of that." He whispered against her lips causing her to smirk.
They finished the walk to her dorm room in silence. He stopped at her door as she unlocked it. "Thank you for tonight." She smiled. It had been exactly what she needed. Luke had been exactly what she needed.
"No thank you. Who knows maybe one day we'll end up telling our children this story one day. Not that I want to encourage our daughters to allow strange men into their rooms. Maybe we should just tell them we met in a coffee shop." He joked obviously, but there was a part of both of them kind of hoped it was true.
"I'll see you later Luke." She grinned.
"Without a doubt." He smirked, placing a kiss on her cheek and waiting till he heard her door lock before walking away.
Whether it lasted or not neither of them knew, but what they did know is that they had found something special in one another.
