Luke had been away for quite some time, and he knew that some father daughter bonding time was overdue. So when Luke flew you and eight year old Kayla to California to visit, he agreed to take Kayla out for the afternoon then leave her with Uncle Michael so he could take you out.
Kayla was more than ready for her day out with her father, and she woke up early to prepare. By the time you and Luke were awake, she had already showered and gotten dressed, and was playing with her dolls quietly. Luke showered first, and while he did you ordered room service for breakfast, setting Kayla at the small table with a plate of pancakes and eggs.
Not long after Luke and Kayla finished eating, Luke picked up his daughter and kissed you goodbye. Luke headed down to the lobby, grinning at his daughter. "What do you want to do, Kayla?" he asked as he set her in the rental car. "We can do whatever you want!"
"Can we go to Build-A-Bear, Daddy? I asked Mommy to take me a couple days ago and she said that maybe you could take me while we were here!" she grinned at him innocently. Luke laughed and got into the driver's seat, nodding.
"I think that can be arranged," he smiled. He flipped on the radio as Kayla shouted her excitement at the prospect that she would finally be going to Build-A-Bear. Luke headed toward the nearby mall and then carried Kayla inside, stopping to see some fans that called for him. But it wasn't too terribly long before the Luke was stopping in front of Build-A-Bear and setting his daughter on her feet. "Hold my hand," he told her seriously, and she nodded, grabbing her dad's wrist and practically pulling her father into the store.
Luke took a deep breath as he stepped into the loud store. He basically let Kayla take the lead, watching as she studied all the possible animal choices. After about ten minutes, she picked up a white kitten with blue and orange dots all over it. She turned to her dad and grinned, holding up the limp shell. "This one, Daddy!"
"Okay!" Luke grinned, pointing her toward the stuffing machine. "Head that way. Do you want to put sound in it?" he asked, and Kayla shook her head.
"Nope!" she hopped over toward the stuffing machine and smiled nicely at the teenage boy sitting on the stool.
"Hi, what's your name?" he asked excitedly, and Kayla answered him loudly before handing him the kitten. "Okay, Kayla, do you want your bear to be soft and squishy or nice and strong?"
"I want him strong," she said after a moment, and the boy nodded, instructing Kayla to step on the pedal. He filled up the kitten and then handed Kayla one of the hearts, coaxing her to rub the heart on her chest so the kitten would know she loves it, and on her arms to make it big and strong. Finally he told her to kiss the heart before she stuck inside the cat and he sewed it up. Then he handed the animal to Kayla and sent her to the bath station.
Kayla hugged the kitten and turned to Luke, holding the kitten up. "Daddy, do you see it? Look how cool!" she giggled.
"Looks awesome, baby girl. Why don't you go give it a bath and brush its fur so we can find it some clothes?" Luke asked, snapping a picture or two to send to you. Kayla quickly gave her animal a bath and then stopped in front of the giant wall of clothes.
Kayla had to get her dad to help her grab the clothes, as she couldn't reach many, but soon her kitten was dressed in boxers, black ripped jeans, and a t-shirt with a guitar on it. In addition, she had grabbed a guitar and a red wig, positioning them both on the kitten before holding the animal up to Luke. "Look, Daddy!" she giggled. "I made a kitten that looks like Uncle Mikey!"
Luke was startled for a minute, and then he chuckled, nodding. "I see that! What are you gonna name him?" he asked.
Kayla thought for a minute and then looked up. "What's Uncle Mikey's middle name?"
"Gordon," Luke laughed. Kayla studied the kitten for a minute and then nodded before skipping off to the computer. When Luke joined her, Kayla was slowly but surely filling out the birth certificate, only pausing to ask Luke how to spell Gordon.
And then ten minutes later, Kayla was leaving with the tell-tale Build-A-Bear box, ready to head back to the hotel to show Uncle Mikey her new animal. And Luke just followed her in amusement, because his daughter was just something else.
