A/N: So, I want to thank oummpje for your nice comments about my Iroh II story, and for requesting this! I went ahead and did a modern and original setting for him since I think he's been a subject of interest more than once and he deserves a compensatory two-tier role in this book.
Basically, without over-explaining myself, in this modern one-shot, you two meet while in school, studying abroad. Three years later, he comes to find you again, in New York.
Check out the song at the top! It's called "Nothing Without Love," and it's by Nate Ruess. It was on the playlist for Letters from Iroh, too! It always reminds me of him, as far as the non-reality based things I think of when it plays go.
I hope you like this one too! It's cute!
Thanks again for your interest and once more to oummpje for yours, especially in this case!
Much love, always!

{There's one part in this that features a TV broadcast that's in italics and separated from the other part(s) with FANCY SPACERS. The format is evident and simple to underhand when you read, I just thought I'd specify. (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)}_________________________
Three years ago, you felt like you'd never fall in love with anyone. It was a relative inconvenience. Your friends all seemed to disagree, telling you, no, ensuring you, imploring you that it was worth it, worth the drawbacks, the arguments, the instability, but you considered their persuasive efforts more akin to a comercial downplaying the side effects of medication rather than any sort of carefree Manifesto Liberato.
Love didn't free any of them, so why would it bring you anywhere but down?
You were wrong though, and after an embarrassingly short time, you'd have to face them with a lowered head, and a much lowered sense of pride.
You were in love, and it all started when you met Iroh.

"Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy {Y/N}! Why don't you come with me and Akiko to the beach? It'll be funnnnn!"
"I don't want to go to the beach, {Your Friend's Name}. I want to do my homework."
"You've got all freakin' summer to do one essay!" You rolled your eyes. "Please? You're the only girl from the States here! Don't make me go alone with all the American boys!"
"Yeah, you'd reallllyyy hate that, wouldn't you?" You scoffed. "I just don't want to. We've got all freakin' summer to go and I just-" you stopped, noticing the look in her eyes. "Fine." You groaned. "I'll go! Don't cry."
"Yay!" {Friend's Name} threw her hands in the air. "And I wasn't going to. You always fall for that."
You muttered something profane under your breath as you followed her down to the water's edge.

"Miss," you took the straw from a recently purchased, overpriced iced coffee out of your mouth so you could reply to the 'officer' who stopped you before you could step foot on the sand. "You can't take that with you."
"What?" You shot back. "I can't take my drink?"
The man shook his head, pointing to a sign, one that looked extremely recently erected. "No, sorry. It's protected territory now. You have to either throw it away or finish it here."
