Mother walked in the door as the red car pulled out of the driveway. It was 10:00pm, late as usual. Mother wobbled into the kitchen as Eve and I finished the spaghetti I had prepared for us earlier today. Mother was drunk, no surprise. I wonder what it's like to have normal parents or a responsible, nice sister.
It seems like I'm the one doing everything. Of course, I'm okay with it but I wish Eve would be nicer to me.
Eve and I went up to the room we shared. A second later a man walked through the front door. I looked downstairs. Mr. Mitch. The man Mother cheated on Papa. Papa left us a while ago because of Mother but he still visits. They never got divorced. Mother was probably gonna go to bed with Mr. Mitch, as usual.
I went to my closet and pulled out a gray sweater.
"Hurry Evelyn. We have school tomorrow. First day." I whispered to Eve as I pulled my favorite black leggings and black boots. My black boots had small heels appropriate for me, a 13 year old. I laid my clothes out on my small black and white vanity before climbing into bed, ready to be horrified by bullies. This time eighth grade edition.
I heard noises from Mother's bedroom and sighed. Can't she just stick to Papa? I pulled the blankets over me and faced the wall of the top bunk.
Eve got her outfit ready and flicked the light switch.
"Night dork. Can't wait to pretend you don't exist tomorrow." Eve cackled like a witch and got into bed.
