Chapter 5

I stop dead as soon as I run outside.

The tree—den—I was in has a nice view of part of the pack territory. The den is far away from the buildings of all sorts of material that scatter the surroundings. Some even are built in trees, with bridges connecting the nearby ones. None of it's covered in snow, which I find odd. Middle-aged people and ages below roam around below, all of them have tanned skin and black or brown hair. Above is a translucent pulsing blue dome.

The Caster's dome. It marks the pack territory. Hides their city.

   "Whoa..."

"Whoa is correct," Kai says, coming up from behind me. I start, but he grabs my wrists and pushes me against the wall of the den I just ran from. He ties my hands with chains that are linked like cuffs. Why were you even stupid enough to think that would work? If you're going to try to escape, Kaila, you have to he smart!

I know that. I have to think of a plan... and soon. Something that involves fire, perhaps.

"Let me tell you a few things, human," Kai snaps. I'm now basically handcuffed to the bed, he's in the chair next to it. Again.

"The moment you walk out there, you are dead. Dead. And then I'm dead because you're dead. So you do not—I repeat—  you do not leave this den without me with you," He snarls. I scowl at him and cross my legs as I sit on the mattress. The chain cuffs dig into my skin and I angrily shake it.

"Would you just answer my question? W—"

"I do not have to do anything for you! Do you think I'd help you at all after what you humans did to us?" Kai yells. I blink at him, trying to comprehend what he just said.

"What... did humans do to you?"

He hesitates at that part, casting a sideways glance to a cup on the ground that I knocked over while running away. I scowl at him—I can't raise one of my eyebrows like some people do. So scowling and brow furrowing does the trick. Also, arguing. And demanding. Along with continually asking the question 'why'.

   "Tell me," I demand.

   "I can't."

   "Why not?"

"It's confidential," he slouches back in the chair again.

   "Why?"

   "Because the Alpha said so."

"I have a right to know."

"No, you don't." He looks easy going, relaxed even. But if I figure correctly, he's probably alert enough to dart after anything in a blink.

"This involves me, I deserve to know," I growl—ignoring the part where I just growled at a werewolf.

   "The Alpha will kill me."

   "I don't care."

"Well, I do," he says defensively, crossing his arms.

"Who said I cared about you?"

"That's enough from you," he growls. I take it as a victory for me, and relish it.

"Will you tell me your name if I tell you why?" I nod my head. "Well it's good to see you're willing. But I'm serious when I say I can't tell you. But you will end up telling me your name.

"Are all werewolves this rude?" I snap at him. He opens his mouth but I go on. "I deserve to know why you killed LeAnne and why you're keeping me here. But you don't care. You type of people just do whatever you want, whenever you want. You don't care about other people's feelings. You're prideful. Selfish. What are people going to think when I go missing, huh? And they find LeAnne's body? They're going to realize it was you. You and your flipping pack. What do you want from me that you can't even tell me, you so far as to kill my mother, and keep me bound against my will?"
