Chapter 9
I am honestly tired of continually blacking out. Tired of waking up disoriented. Tired of Malakai looking at me like he cares. When really, this is all his fault. He brought me here. He took away my life. Took away LeAnne. Though at the same time...
I can't help but thank him.
And I hate myself for thinking that. I believe in fate. That some things aren't coincidences. Luck. That some things happen for a reason. So maybe this is fate? It wasn't like I was totally successful back in the town. Back with LeAnne. I was average. Normal. Not important.
But if I'm so important that Kai has to keep me alive. That he didn't kill me... then maybe this is for the better. That doesn't mean I'm ever forgiving him for killing LeAnne though. She was still like my mother, always.
And that conversation the Alpha and Kai had earlier? Only proves that I am here for a reason. The same reason The Caster, the Alpha, and Kai all reacted the way they did during the Ceremony. It's because I have a bigger purpose. I may not know what it is yet, but I will find out soon. I can promise myself as much as that.

A knock on the door brings me out of my thoughts. I sit up from my bed and quickly grab my brush. "Who is it?" I call, brushing out my silver hair so it's not so frizzy.
"Just open the door!" A person calls. I can't tell if it's male or female, so I open the door a crack. Standing there is a young girl with jet black hair tied back in a low ponytail, deeply tanned skin, and a pack of gum.
"Hi. Kaila, right? This is for you," she says, handing me the gum. Her voice is deeper than I'd expected, with a lilt on her words that make her sound like she has a Swedish accent. She has a round, lean face that has many scratches on it. She wears a worn dark blue hoodie and dusty black pants. She's about the same height of Humphry.
"Um... Thanks. Who are you? And how do you know who I am?" I ask, turning over the gum. "And what's this for?" I watch as she strolls into my den and looks around, helping herself to an apple I didn't finish. I then realized she doesn't wear any type of shoes. I glimpse and see her soles are callused and cracked.
"You're very famous right now. The girl who knows stuff about werewolves, but has lived with humans all her life. Also, I'm Max, your fellow Omega. The gum is for—"
"Wait—wait! I'm an Omega?" She frowns sideways.
"That is what I said, isn't it?" She asks rhetorically, her mouth full of apple.
I gap in shock. I'm the Omega? I'm the Omega? I'm going to die. How can this happen? Does this mean I don't have any wolf spirit? I'm-
"Stop overthinking it," Max interrupts my thoughts.
I blink at her. "How did you—?"
"You have that look on your face," she explains, swiping across hers with her hand. "I've seen it enough times to recognize it." I nod distantly at her explanation.
"So... you're an Omega too?" She nods. "How many are there in this pack?"
"Good to hear you have wolf lexicon correct. Oh, I mean vocabulary," she changes, seeing my confused face. "Counting you and me, there are now three Omegas. Though I suppose you don't technically count as one just yet..." She trails off, cupping her face and looking sideways.
"What do you mean, I don't count?" Max purses her lips and shakes her head.
"Nothing. C'mon, let me show you the territory. Or, rather, the Omega part of it. We can't technically go into the main parts of the pack," she explains, walking out the door and completely eats the apple core before tucking her hands in her hoodie pocket.
