Chapter 6

Not a single dream as I slept, which was slightly surprising. You'd think after seeing the closest being to a mom killed, then get knocked out and kidnapped, and being hit on by your kidnapper would give you nightmares. Guess not.

I woke up to find myself tangled in bedsheets, Kai was nowhere to be seen. A note lays scrawled on the tree stump that serves as a nightstand next to the bed.

Someone will come around noon to bring you lunch. Here's a brush to get rid of that rats nest of hair. No need to thank me.
Malakai
P.S: Don't run away.

I get up and try to open the door. Locked. Of course. Rats nest? A small hand mirror lays on a table I look at myself. Eek. Not a pretty sight.

Wait did he say lunch? I scramble around the room for some sort of thing that tells time. What about...?

My phone! Crap, I bet they searched me while I was knocked out.

I pat my pockets just in case and come up empty. I don't usually have a watch with me, usually using it at school if I don't have my phone on me. I didn't think Kai had one on either. Do werewolves even use watches?

I then spy a slab of stone outside the window. A sun dial! I climb up on a stool and peak outside. Too bad the window's too small to crawl out of. He did say lunch, so it must be around noon. True enough, the sun dial's shadow points near the middle. So I just have to wait for someone to come by with food to talk to someone.

Thinking about food makes me realize I haven't eaten anything since yesterday's brunch. Twenty-four hours, give or take, without food or water.

   Well, that's healthy.

I flop back on to the bed and pick up the brush next to the note. Best be presentable and get rid of my "rat nest" before lunch. It hurt to run it through my hair. Maybe I could just chop it all off. A few gruelling minutes later, I tie my knot-free hair into a silver ponytail.

   Knock, knock, knock

"Is this the food?" I call out.

"Pardon?" I hear a confused voice say through the door. "Are you decent, miss?" I stifled a laugh at the uneasy voice, debating if I should say 'no' or not.

"Uh, yeah," I call. Best not to unnerve the person that gives me food. I hear a rustle that sounds like keys and the door clicks. A young boy—maybe 13?—comes in with food on a plastic tray. Great, school food a over again. Though... It actually looks good.

"The Beta has asked me to bring you this." He sets down the tray on the table and stands next to it awkwardly. Beta? Is that Kai? I tilt my head at him.

He's medium height, probably reaching a little over my elbows. Round green eyes and a mop of brown hair. His nose is small, but like a beak. He looks kind of lanky, but still has that baby-fat in his cheeks. He's dressed in a faded and dirty white long-sleeved shirt, brown pants, and some sort of shoes I've never seen before.

"What's your name, kid?" I ask, digging into my sandwich. He looks at me skeptically.

"I don't think I'm supposed to tell you that." He starts scratching his elbows.

"Nah, c'mon. I wanna know your name. I'll tell you mine," I offer. More scratching.

"Okay, what's your name, miss?" He sounds so formal, it's adorable.
