Chapter 10
"Hey Kaila! Kaila!" A voice yells, banging on my door. I groan and lift my head up, wiping my crusted eyes. I debate whether to open the door or go back to sleep when Malakai yells again. "Kaila I know you're awake! I can hear you growling!"
I swear at the door, hoping he'd hear that as well. Taking my brush, I crawl out of my warm bed. As soon as I open the door, Malakai looks at me up and down with a frown and slight furrow in his brows.
"What?" I ask, looking down at my wrinkled clothes. A plaid red long-sleeved button-up and blue jeans. The same ones I wore yesterday. Malakai shakes his head.
"Don't you have any more clothes?"
"You've never given me any clothes. I have one extra pair that I found in the bushes, and that's it. And those won't last very long," I glower at him, ripping my hair out of my brush and throwing it out the door. He frowns and sidesteps as it floats down.
"Alright. Do you want any more clothes?"
"No, I think I'll go au naturel for now on. Be one with nature, you know?" I snap at him. I take my silver hair and start braiding it to the side. His frown deepens and he narrows his eyes.
"What is with you today? Know what, never mind. I came to tell you something important," he says, walking into my den. I flop on my bed, curling up in the covers. He sits in his regular chair. I gesture for him to get on with it.
"You're an Omega." I blink at him. I have to act surprised so I don't get Max in trouble.
"I'm what?" I ask, acting shocked. "I don't have any wolf spirit?"
"I'm sorry, Kaila. I have to take you to the borders now. There are two other Omegas: Maxine and Tree-Dweller. You'll meet them soon. Hopefully they'll help you adjust. Get your stuff together and let's go." His voice isn't soft and caring, but it also isn't hard and emotionless. It holds a tone mixed with his Beta authority that I can't distinguish.
"Why can't I stay here?" I look around the tree I've called home for the last month.
"Rules. This isn't meant for an Omega. Omegas live in the raw wilderness."
"You live in the raw wilderness. You just have a bed to sleep in every night. That's not very fair," I snap, thinking about Max's cave.
"Do not argue with me, Omega. From now on you will address me as 'Beta Malakai'. Is that clear?" I say nothing, but he takes it as an understood. "Good. Now pack up whatever you have and let's go," he snarls. I finally pick out that odd tone: disgust. He's disgusted by me, that I have no wolf spirit. That I am 'impure', as Max put it.
Over something I can never control? How ridiculous!I hold my anger and grab everything I have into a backpack he gave me. The newest thing I have here. Everything I can grab goes into the bag: spare clothes, some rocks I've collected, my brush, my mirror, the bedding, any items from previous meals, and the obsidian spearhead I found near someone's den. I feel like this will come in handy very soon.
"Okay. Let's go," Ka—Beta Malakai growls. I follow him without another word.
**********
A few moments and a silent walk later, he brings me to around where Max's cave is. I don't see either of my fellow Omegas around. Actually, it's really quiet right now. Peaceful act—
Suddenly a gutteral howl rips through the chirping noise of the birds. I freak and whirl around, where Beta Malakai stands with his shoulders thrown back and his head tipped up. His ears have grown more pointed, and his teeth elongated. His features look like, big surprise, a werewolf.
