Azriel stood at the edge of the cliff looking out onto the deep blue water below. His wings were heavy and draping along the ground, an act frowned upon by all Illyrians as it showed defeat and sorrow, but he had good reason. Elain. He had loved her. Loved the way her delicate fingers wove crowns of flowers. Loved the way her hair fell in waves down her back. Loved the way her laugh was always filled with joy and promise, but that was taken from him. For now, she only had eyes for Lucien.
It had been a week since Elain and Lucien had completed the mating bond, but Azriel could still see that golden glow that surrounded them. It made him mad, so mad his shadows became darker, denser. It now boiled and churned deep inside him, and he knew that with a twitch of his finger he could drown them all in his darkness. It wasn't just that glow that irritated him but the fact that she was now covered in his scent, musk and sandal wood. It infuriated him that she would ignore him at the most innocent of times. Every moment he took to try and converse with Elain she would reject. She would turn away, finding a vase of flowers to reorganize or a table to set.
Azriel stepped back from the edge of the cliff, his dark brown eyes glinting in the sunlight. He should forget her. Forget her not only for Lucien's sake but his also. She would stop him from living. Stop him from loving.
The autumn breeze ruffled his raven locks, the grass around him swaying. He turned sharply as his nose caught the scent of someone oh so familiar.
His eyes settled on the woman before him, her body sheathed in a midnight blue dress.
"What are you doing here?" he hissed at Feyre, his eyes lingering on the dagger strapped to her hip.
"I wanted to see how you were doing", her voice was soft and gentle unlike his cutting tone.
"I'm fine", his words came out sharper than he'd intended.
"Not for one moment will I believe that. I can see the pain in your eyes. And don't think I haven't noticed your shadows darkening. You don't sleep, you barely eat, and you've become slow."
Azriel scowled at the power in her last words. He wasn't slow. He was tough and immortal and as quick as lightning.
"You need to move on Az, she was never yours and never will be. As strong as you are, your power is nothing compared to the strength of a mate bond, but I think you already knew that. Thinking about her will just drag you deeper into your darkness, its already happened once and you were only just saved, don't let it happen again or I fear you will be beyond saving. You need to keep your head above the water."
Her words were like a knife to his heart.
"I said I was fine ", the lie burned inside his mouth.
Feyre watched as tendrils of shadow wrapped around his arms and torso, his eyes turned onyx and the grass at his feet shriveled and died. Her eyes dimmed with worry.
"calm it Az, contain it, you are in control." As she spoke she sent a lick of cool air down his body, helping to settle the shadows inside.
As she strolled toward him flowers grew and bloomed behind her filling the air with a sweet scent that cleared his head. Her hands rested softly on his cheeks as her soft voice filled the air.
"You are coming to The House of Wind tomorrow with us for dinner. I will see you there. " Azriel knew he could not argue with her, he was powerful, but she was more so. His eyes flickered shut and head tilted as her callused hand glided across his cheek, her thumb gently skimming his cheek bone.
She sighed and let her hand drop, his eyes slowly fluttering open. She turned and ambled away, her long hair flowing behind her in the wind, the sun making it glow golden. She was nearly at the tree line when she stopped and turned around.
Her words were barely audible above the rustle of the trees."
"We all find someone Az, and I know you will too. It could be tomorrow or maybe in a year or maybe even in a hundred just don't stop looking." With that she walked into the shadow of the whispering trees.
Azriel's mind swarmedwith all her words. He knew everything that had been spoken was true. He wouldfind someone, he just hopped it would be soon.
