My room is going to smell like tobacco and paper for so long. Oh, dammit, Piper, you're getting distracted. These cigarettes must be out of the carpet! I don’t want Niall to get mad at me. How the hell did Zayn even get all of this up here in such a short amount of time? He’s magic. Probably not, but that’s what I choose to believe at the moment.
Cigarette after cigarette and article after article. That’s basically what my room looked like. I bent over and pulled out the first few I saw, throwing them in the nearest trash can when my hands were full. Surprisingly, I was done around ten minutes later. Now to do with the articles.
I ripped the closest one off of the wall. It didn’t come off very cleanly, though. The poor piece of paper was ripped in half, and dangling from a piece of rolled up tape on the wall. I really want some Rolos now… Focus! I peeled the tape off the wall also, careful not to mess up the paint, and looked around for somewhere to put it. I looked down at my jeans and shrugged. It’s not like they’re some fancy designer shit or anything. I stuck the tape on my jeans and kept going at it. I finally had all but one down, and the trash can was almost overflowing. My poor jeans looked like they were raped by a tape dispenser. I tore down the last article and shoved it in the trash can. All done; no remnants of Zayn’s ‘welcome present’ to be seen.
The worst remnants can't be seen, though, I thought to myself. I knew that now I was past Zayn and his prank; I was fully on my mom. Now, why did I have to somehow always be reminded of this? An alleyway, strange man, smoking people outside of a restaurant, even freaking medical equipment constantly bring up some memory bore into my mind. I just can't get away from it, the guilt I feel for not being the daughter my mother wanted me to be. Me and my selfishness of wanting a mother instead of an addict drove her into the hands of her dealer, and coincidentally, her murderer.
A knocking noise came from my door, successfully scaring the life out of me in the process. I turned to see Niall slowly opening the door and peeking his head inside.
“Oh, you finished.” He looked slightly disappointed. “I was going to offer to help you.”
I cracked a smile, but only briefly. “Damn. If only you’d gotten here a little earlier. You could have saved my jeans from their unfortunate tape situation.”
He glanced down at my pants and started laughing. “Hey! I had nowhere else to put it!” I defended, but ultimately ended up laughing along with him.
“As much as I love this look on you, you might want to clean that up,” he said very sarcastically.
“I know. I look like I got raped with a tape dispenser.” I began picking the tape off of my pants. Niall erupted in laughter again and fell to the ground, clutching his stomach and gasping for breath. He needs to stop laughing before someone calls an ambulance. I looked at my hands, now covered in tape, and looked back at Niall. A devilish grin spread across my face as I ran to the door and stuck as many pieces of tape on him as I could. He stood and looked down at his shirt, and I bit my lip to stifle my laughter.
“Oh, it’s on, lass!” He ran at me, pelting me with bits of tape as I tried, in vain, to get away, breathless with laughter. We continued on like this until both of us were so covered in tape that we could have been the poster children for a Scotch add—in fact, I had almost forgotten about Zayn and his prank when our feet somehow got tangled and we tripped, landing hard on the carpeted floor. His arms automatically went around me and I let them, trying to remember the last time someone had held me like this. I had just enough time to notice that he smelled like amber and oranges before he gently pushed me away and stood up.
