Six years later….
“Mahzl tav!” Louis yelled in celebration, patting Liam on the back with no lack of gusto. The man was twenty-seven years old, but he hadn’t changed a bit. I was beginning to think he never would. “Congrats on finally getting hitched, lad. About time.” The music was so loud that he had to scream to be heard, but none of us minded. Behind us, the beautiful ball room was filled with people laughing and dancing, the food forgotten. The caterer would be pissed, but I was sure Danielle and Liam were happy. This was exactly how they’d wanted this to go.
Liam went beet red. “Hey, it’s better than getting married at twenty-two and twenty like you and Harry did. At least my parents never threatened to disown me. Besides, Zayn isn’t married yet.”
“Yeah,” Niall said, “but he doesn’t count. Or have you forgotten that he’s the Romeo of our little group?”
Zayn shook his head in amusement. “I’ll have you know,” he said, tightening his grip on Perrie’s waist, “that today is our six-year anniversary. And in fact, I proposed last night. I was going to wait until after the wedding to tell you, but….”
He was interrupted by Danielle, Louis, and I’s squeals. “That’s so great, Zayn! I’m so proud of you!”
“You and me both,” Perrie laughed, letting go of Zayn so the boys could pat him on the back and do whatever manly protocol called for when your best friend got engaged. “I thought he would never ask. You look beautiful, by the way, Danielle.”
She beamed. I thought back fondly to my own wedding day. I hadn’t been able to stop smiling, either. “Thank you! That dress looks great on you. And Piper, we’ve been so busy with wedding plans that I didn’t realize how big you’ve gotten! How far along are you now?”
“Seven months,” I replied, rubbing my stomach. It had been weird when I first started showing to look down and see the most of my belly that I’d ever seen in my life, but I didn’t mind anymore. I loved the feel of another person inside me. “We’re so excited. Niall has been baby-proofing the new house since I told him I was pregnant.”
“That sounds like him,” she laughed. “Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?”
I leaned closer to whisper to both of them. “It’s a boy. I found out a long time ago. But don’t tell him—he wanted it to be a surprise. I’m going to tell him on my due date.”
We exchanged a few more hushed words before Danielle had to scurry off for her first dance with Liam. I went to stand beside Niall, still smiling. “Wow. Danielle and Liam married, and Zayn engaged. Almost all of us.” I put my head on his shoulder. “It’s a beautiful wedding, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. But not nearly as beautiful as you.” He smiled, extending his hand. “Would you like to dance?”
“Of course.” I followed him out onto the dance floor. We didn’t fit together the way we once did, but somehow the way we had to dance with his arms just barely going around my neck and our son between us was even more special. Across the floor, Zayn and Perrie were deaf to the rest of the world, Harry and Louis were waltzing with little three-year-old Darcy squished between them, and Danielle and Liam were dancing for the first time as husband and wife. Whirlwind romances and tricks of fate had become marriages and kids and engagements. Six years ago, I would have told you I was never getting married, never getting tied down, but things change and people change and I was so unbelievably glad I did. And I was glad I had managed to maintain a friendship with this many people for so long. Six years ago, I made a vow to change, and I guessed that I had lived up to my own promise.
I’m sure that’s all Mom would have wanted from me, after all.
