Mum and I strolled down the high street, arms linked, laughing our heads off. We stopped off at occasional shops along the way to peer into the intricate displays behind the glass with no intention of buying anything.
Along the way, my stomach grumbled and after sharing a look with mum, we decided to duck into a small cafe nestled amongst the vintage shops.
The smell of freshly brewed coffee and bacon sandwiches filled my nose as the bell rang above the door when we bustled in. We chose a small table in the corner and sat down in the squishy leather chairs, both thankful for the rest for our aching feet.
Once we had ordered and got settled, mom turned to me with a twinkle in her eye and a grin on her lips
"So how's Tyler?"
I felt the heat rush to my cheeks and I looked down at my hands. Since our fallout a few weeks ago, Tyler and I had only gotten closer. We now spend most of our free time together going on dates to cafes and walks in the park, it was a dream.
Honestly my whole life feels like a dream, for once in my life, everything is falling into place. I have my mom and dad, a gorgeous boyfriend, a stable home, everything I've ever wanted in life. Part of me is waiting for the moment I'm going to wake up.
"He's perfect"
I mumbled, grinning to myself
"How are you and dad?"
I grinned at her causing her to nearly spit out her cup of tea, her cheeks flushed beetroot and I giggled. Like mother like daughter.
"Well..I..um......your dad and I...um"
She cleared her throat
"We're...um...we're good"
I continued laughing
"I see"
I raised my eyebrows at her suspiciously
"You already know don't you?"
She sighed rolling her eyes. I nodded my head. she clearly knows my dad very very well.
"We went on a 'date' if that's what you were insinuating"
I wolf whistled at her, wiggling my eyebrows. We both proceeded to break down into fits of giggles causing other customers to raise their eyebrows at us but we didn't care, this is why we had both craved since I was born.
Once we had composed ourselves and wiped the tears from our eyes, I cleared my throat, preparing to ask a potentially dangerous question
"Mum?"
She looked questioningly at me as she tucked into her bacon sandwich.
"Tell me about dad's drug addiction"
She finished chewing, a look of complete seriousness etched into her previously joyful face.
"That was his old self, he's different now. Or so he says"
I didn't want to push it any further so we ate the rest of our meal and payed in silence.
As we walked back to Bakers street, mum broke the silence
"I'm sorry sweetheart but your dad's issues are a touchy subject for me, it's one of the reasons I left him in the first place... one of the reasons I couldn't keep you"
A new wave of anger briefly washed over me.
That was the reason I didn't have a family.
Because of his selfishness.
I could feel mum's worried eyes on me and I become aware of the fact I was balling my fists and biting down on my lip.
"Don't get angry at him Soph, he didn't know. And he promised me that he has changed."
I nodded taking a deep breath before going up the steps to dad's apartment.
"Dad"
I called out on the stairs, no reply.
I entered the apartment calling out again. The only reply was inaudible mumbling from dad's room.
I followed it and opened his door, quickly clamping my hand over my mouth. Dad was sat in the middle of the floor, shaking with his head in his hands.
Tears were in his eyes as he looked up at me from his spot on the floor.
"I can't do this Sophie"
He mumbled to me.
