The small girl lay in her bed, crying for her brother. A small part of her knew he wasn't coming back, but she wanted to believe.
If they moved, all hope would be lost. He could be dead for all she knew.
Hearing their daughter's tears, Isabella's parents had some sympathy for their daughter. They decided to let her live with her aunt in Manhattan. It was a pretty big move from Brooklyn to Manhattan, but it was still close enough.
~~~~~~~~~2 weeks later ~~~~~~~~~
"Alright Daddy, I'm ready" Isabella sighed looking around her house for the last time. She held a small suitcase, and her father carried the rest to the carriage.
Isabella hardly remembered her aunt Jen. She was a single woman that was always busy. She had many little jobs to make money after her husband left her, including waitressing at a restaurant called Tibby's. She had only seen her once in her life, when Race was sick. Her mother went with her to visit, and Race and her dad had stayed home. She was only two.
Once arriving at aunt Jen's Isabella stepped uncertainly out of the carriage. She saw two newsies run by tossing a newspaper back and forth. Their great outgoing spirit, and their hats, reminded her of Race, and she had to look away. Aunt Jen ran up to her and gave her a bear hug.
"Oh darling, it's been too long!" She cried.
"Can't- breathe-"
"Sorry sweetie. Come on, let's get your things inside." Together the child and her aunt unloaded the carriage.
Isabella's parents came out of the carriage to her to say goodbye, but she turned away. Her mother shed a tear as her husband ushered her back in. They rode away without a second glance. Never even saying goodbye to their daughter.
The next few weeks are wonderful. Isabella and her aunt become close, and enjoy each other's company. Jen even takes Isabella out to work with her.
But no bond is unbreakable.
