Months past. Isabella forgot that she was with her aunt. It was more like a mother, or best friend. She completely forgot about her parents. Either that or she didn't care. This was the best family she could ever ask for.
~~~~~~~~~8 Months Later~~~~~~~~~
Isabella sat on her bed a few months after her tenth birthday. She flopped backwards so her head was no longer on the bed, and she could see her hair touching the floor. The door creaked open. Aunt Jen came in- but she heard another voice. A man.
Maybe it was just some guy she picked up at the diner. Isabella decided to stay in her room and let them, talk, or whatever.
"Isabella, we're home!"
"We?"
"Oh, honey this is George. We've been dating for a few months. He comes by the diner every day." She smiles.
"A few months? And you didn't tell me!?" Isabella was mad. This was the kind of lying and hiding that drove Race away from home.
"Yes. I'm sorry sweetie, it was just a lot for you to take in. Well- now, we're getting married. I figured now would be a good time to tell you."
"Great time. Thanks Jen." Isabella said sarcastically. She walked out the front door, slamming it behind her. She sat on the front step and watched newsies run by. She held her head in her hands and cried. How could she not tell her!?"
Later that night, Jen had gone out for another shift at some job. Lucky Isabella, she left George to take care of her. Isabella had argued that she could take care of herself, but Jen said they needed to meet and spend 'quality time'. As soon as she left Isabella went to her room. George stormed in after her.
"Listen here brat. You will listen to me- and do as I say. For some reason, Jen likes you, and refuses to get rid of you like I told her to. Do you hear?"
"I don't even know you." She says shakily. He slaps her hard across the face.
"You don't need to know me, I'm in charge! Understand?" He booms. Isabella held her cheek and cried. Nobody had even even raised a hand to hit her before. Not responding resulted in another slap to the face, this one harder than the last. She screamed, and he held a hand over her mouth.
"I live here now, and you will NOT speak of this to your aunt. Understand?" She nodded, and he left.
What now? She thought, tears streaming down her face.
