Ever since Natalie's dad passed away, her life hasn't been the same. When she and her mum move in with her new stepdad, her relationship with her mother became strained; the once close and loving dynamic giving way to one filled with arguments and tension.
After a particularly bad argument, Natalie decides that she can't go on like this, living like an outcast in her own family. She wants a clean slate, so packs up her most important belongings, and gets in her car, with no particular plan; just letting life run its course and take her along with it.
After driving for a couple of hours, she sees a hitch-hiker on the side of the road, and instantly recognises him as her childhood best friend Ethan, whom she hasn't seen for 8 years, since he moved away when they were 10 years old.
She decides to pull over and pick him up, and Ethan recognises her just as she did him. He had been planning on hitch-hiking to the next town over, about 10 miles away, but decides against it and stays with her instead.
They create a list of things they've always wanted to do but have been too scared to (essentially a bucket list) and the rest of the book revolves around them travelling around to cross each thing off the list. Their bond strengthens, and they begin to develop feelings for each other. However, before they can see where it goes, they are found by the police, who have been looking for Natalie since the week after she ran away, when her mum realised she wasn't returning. The two are forced to go their separate ways.
The epilogue takes place around 6 months after they part, when she is walking to a café to meet her friends. A car pulls up alongside her, and Ethan leans out of the window and asks if she needs a ride.
