So this is my new Death Note fan-fiction. If you read Note To Self, you'll know that it was mainly from a 'Wammy's/Near and Mello arc' point of view. And also that it involved a lot of shenanigans. This one however, is from the first part of the story with L and the task force, and is also more serious.
I am actually quite pleased with it so far and I hope to write more soon.
Sorry that it's a little short, I'll try and make the chapters longer from here on out :D
I hope you enjoy! Read, my dear children, read :D

Shadows cast on the walls, their dancing figures twisted and turned as their owners moved gracefully.
By the window sat a lone figure, she looked out into the night sky. In her hands she held a small notepad and a pencil as she sketched the sight before her artistically. Behind her sat the simple television, it displayed the current news on the Kira case.
She finished her drawing and pinned it on the wall with the rest of her artwork. For a moment she stood back to admire her work. All around the dimmly lit room hung drawings, sketches and the occassional painting. They each held great significance to their creator. And, most of them featured one particular person, someone very dear to her. Someone now gone.
Blinking away the memories that desperatly tried to surface, she sat down on the couch before the television. There was nothing new on the news, just the usual. 'Mass murderer Kira killing off criminals, detective L in charge of Japanese task force, etcetera, etcetera'
Of course L would be working on the task force, he wouldn't let a great opportunity like this slip. Although he's taking longer to solve this one, almost 8 months already? His performance is declining. She thought resentfully to herself.
Just like that the screen on her laptop changed to display L's signature letter. She hadn't heard from said person in quite a while, she looked at the screen before her in slight confusion. Tempted to just shut the lid, she never wanted to hear from L again after what happened. Although, she knew it must be important for L to contact her, so she decided to hear him through.
"Speak of the devil," she said, knowing L would be listening.
"You really shouldn't sit in the dark, it'll damage your eyesight." A encrypted voice replied. She knew that L had not only accessed her laptop screen, but he could also see through the small built-in webcam.
"I can do what I want thank you very much, and I have 20/20 vision till death according to my diagnosis, do you not remember?" She stated. Not in the mood for L's talk, she wanted to know what L wanted from her. "What the hell do you want?"
"I require your assistance on the Kira case." He said, getting straight to the point, just like L.
"What's in it for me? Because last time I 'helped', you threw HIM in jail." She stared coldly into the webcam.
"There's no exceptions when it comes to the law, and if you help me I'll let you visit him," L replied. She stared at the screen for a few seconds before replying.
"You're lying, even with your stupid voice encryptor I can tell, who do you play me for? Don't think I didn't know, he died in January, no thanks to you." She spat bitterly. It was a sensitive subject for her and she blamed L for it. She crossed her arms and furrowed her eyebrows, anticipating his response.
"Artemis…. I'm sorry, I-" L began to say but was interrupted.
"You, sorry? Hah! Don't make me laugh, you don't care at all. You never did!" Artemis spat back at him.
She heard L's breath hitch from the other end of the line, one of remorse. Wait… did I really hear that.. No, I can't have, it was just my imagination.
"Will you just assist me in this.... Beyond wouldn't have wanted to see you like this…-" L was about to go on but Artemis beat him to it.
"Okay."
"What?" L asked, even with the encryptor she could hear the slight surprise in his voice. She chuckled to herself.
"I said I'll do it, don't make me regret it." She replied simply looking away from the laptop in defeat.
"There's a car waiting for you outside." And with that L cut the line. Just like him, so sure that his plan will work.
And indeed a car there was. Artemis packed up her few belongings, along with her artwork, and walked out of the small, cheap apartment that had been her residence as of late.
Watari greeted her warmly as she climbed into the vehicle. Despite her resent for L, she had always liked Watari. He was the only family she had known after her parents had died, he was a much better father than her biological father.
And with that, the car drove away from the apartment block, on it's way to the task force headquarters where she would see L for the first time in a year.
