The wolves bark as I lead them in a wild goose chase around the banks of the river. It's too dangerous to fight both of the wolves simultaneously. I need to create an opening, if only for a moment. And to do that, there is one strategy I could use. With a flick of my tail, using it like a rudder to keep my balance, I make a sharp turn to circle back to the area me and horned rabbit made our stand. As I do so, I see two sets of fangs closing in on me and I immediately regret my decision and panic. I didn't realize just how close they were to me.
I hear the snap of teeth along with a threatening growl as a bite whiffs my ear. The wolves are just barely agile enough to intercept me as I dash past them.
Holy shit, I thought I completely screwed myself over for a second there. Never doing that again.
As I run towards the messy pile of stones, sticks, and fruits that littered the ground, I catch a glimpse of the rabbit's situation.
Two wolves surrounded the rabbit, attacking it in a furious frenzy, yet somehow the rabbit held complete control over the fight.
The rabbit dodged left and right, flipping through the air and sliding while also launching a shard of stone whenever the wolves left themselves open; Sometimes doing both at the same time. The sound of earth whizzing through the air and the pained yelps that came soon after marked its dominance.
I still can't believe what I'm seeing. The things horned rabbit can do made the carnivorous plant seem so trivial. It's like everything I knew about the rabbit was a lie.
What else is a lie? Was the world a lie? ...Am I a lie?
I shake my head to dispel the thoughts.
Focus. The existential mid-life crisis can wait later. There are more pressing issues to worry about.
I glance back to verify the wolves chasing me are following closely behind.
Anyway, if things go according to plan, then I should be able to neutralize one of the wolves. But what if I miss? No, don't think about that. It worked once before, so it should work again now... I hope.
Pushing all doubts from my mind, I run towards my once intact masterpiece while carefully stepping over the fallen materials as to not accidentally trip. Then, in one swift movement, I snatch the basket from the ground, stop, and turn abruptly toward the wolves as I thrust the open end of the basket forwards.
The wolf that trailed directly behind me fails to react in time. There is a muffled cry as the basket slams into the wolf's head. Half of its muzzle poked through the woven grass, keeping the basket lodged in place.
The wolf topples to the ground as its sight was robbed. The second wolf that followed closely behind the first stumbles as it trips over its fallen friend.
With this brief opening, I leap forward and launch a series of punches against the wolf's head, pounding it up and down and left and right as it sounds a solid thump with each impact. The wolf tried to bite me in retaliation, but I would punch in the opposite direction and foil its attempt. However, no matter how many punches I land, the wolf just won't go down. In fact, every time I punch it, its fur puffs up increasingly, getting angrier and angrier with every hit. It's practically shrugging off my attacks now.
With one final strike, I throw a punch straight into its nose. The wolf recoils heavily from the blow. Out of all the punches, why did only my last hit seem to have any effect? That doesn't make sense... was it because of its fur?
Dammit, I couldn't bring it down. I need to find another way to deal with them.
I turn to resume running before the wolf recovered. As I do so, the first wolf who I attacked with the basket suddenly appears at my left; Its mouth wide open as it dashes forward to bite me.
