Ok, so here's a thought; what did Kai do in the window of time between his parents being forced to leave him and Nya and to the first episode where we see him at the blacksmith's shop? I mean, you can't exactly expect property to be given to a 3-year-old and a baby, one that is a dangerous blacksmith's shop to boot! So I guess that Kai is maybe 18 at the start of the series, as that is the age of adulthood in our world, and I assume that it's about the same as Ninjago. 2-3 to 18; that's a pretty large time gap! So I think that Kai was
1) Probably sent to some shithole orphanage. I mean, the people of Ninjago don't really seem to concerned with the affairs of its unpopular youth; just look at Darkley's!
2) A rebel. Kai's fiery spirit doesn't really do well with strict rules, ones that places like the one he most likely ended up in are full of. Definitely a troublemaker.
3) Overprotective of Nya because you never really know what can happen with strange weirdos all around! It's become a habit to loom over her shoulder because it's scary to be on your own and responsible for a young girl to boot!
4) He probably got his scar in a fight with some other boys in the orphanage. He's a troublemaker, right?
