Three years later

( same top, same shoes, shorts and cardigan in the pictures above)

I had been in this Prairie for around three years now, the once empty square of land was now buzzing with life and other girls.

That's another thing I noticed, only girls have been sent up here, of all shapes and sizes and talents.

For example, Ada is our cook, she makes the best cheese toasties.

Or Emma, who takes on a bloody great hair dresser as a side job, I had her cut my hair to just below my shoulders with layers. But she's mainly a medjack.

There is this one girl who's quite snarky, when she first came up she refused to work and sat inside, I did have a go at her on several occasions. In my defence, she was pissing me off.

Then theres me, Lauren and Sophie, we're all Runners, we scan and analyse the maze, mapping it, searching for a way out. But so far, we've found nothing of the sort.

Rosa's still here as well, after about four other girls came up we decided to each carve our names into the wall, well now there are few that have been sadly crossed out due to panic consuming them, running out to the maze and never returning, that sorta thing.

Today though, today is that one day of the month that the box comes up with our supplies and a new greenie.

I was working out in the vegetable garden on my off day today with Sonya, a tall blonde haired girl, she was taller than me.

Thats when we heard it, the dreaded sound of a siren, signalling the box's arrival.

I glanced at Sonya, motioned her with my head to follow and we ran past the homestead, where we hold meetings, past the forests and to the box.
Tightening my now off white cardigan around my waist on the way since it was falling down.

We all stood around the box, staring at it and waiting for the outer lid it open so we could lift the cage open.

As it did just that, the small figure in the box wasn't moving.

"Han, help me open this" Rosa said to me hurriedly.I nodded and positioned myself on the other side of the box and lifting it open.

"Oh my god," I said, covering my mouth with my hand. " it's a child."

And in the box was a small girl that looked around 11-12 years old. Keep in mind most girls are 13-14 or older before being sent into the box, I mean, I think I was around 14.

"That's just wrong" I whispered. All the girls were silent, including Harriet, who was always talking and bubbly.

I glanced at Rosa, who nodded, and jumped down into the box.
The girl had deep chocolate brown hair and caramel skin. I shook her by the shoulder gently but nothing happened.

I then crouched down by her and checked her pulse by her neck.

Sighing deeply realizing she was alive, I stood up and announced.

"Yeah, she's alive." I confirmed, bot taking my eyes off the young girl. There have been instances which we don't talk about, where girls come up but never wake up. We don't know why, and usually they were around the same age as this one, or slightly older since we've never had someone this young before. It only happened like once, luckily, but was still quite traumatic.

I picked her up and carried her to the edge where Rosa took her and Rachel, a black haired, pale faced girl, helped me out.

Since the box came late today and everyone had already eaten, we decided to give it a rest until tomorrow, so when our newbie wakes up Rosa can give the tour.

Sighing, I made my way over to Sophie.

"What do you think that means?" She questioned as I joined her.

"I think it means they're running out of people to throw into the maze." She then gave me a concerned look. " don't worry, when they start throwing boys in here, that's when you can worry." I joked, chuckling lightly.

We were about to take a walk around the forest like we usually did around this time but the plan was spoiled when sploshes of rain plopped down, begining to get faster and faster each second we stood out there. The place grayed and we silently agreed to take cover before either of us get too drenched.

"Before you go to bed, just so you know you're on runner duty with me tomorrow." I informed, turning to watch her nod a thanks.

I stretched and removed my cardigan from my waist and slid my arms in. A purple sunset arising and winds peaking making it slightly chilly.

Then stepped into my hammock, closing my eyes and waiting for the thud of the door closing. Slowly begining to drift off to sleep.
